Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard insured a few important breakthroughs on Sunday in one dive in the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The Frenchman has World No. 4 Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-5 upset to seal the biggest victory of his career by PIF ATP ranking. With an hour of an hour of 25 minutes in the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, one who rubbed his painful loss to Fritz of two sets earlier this year in Wimbledon, Mpetshi Perricard also booked his place in the fourth round at an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time.

Although Perricard achieved his victory in straight sets, moist circumstances in Shanghai made the meeting of Sunday a major physical test for both players. It was the ability of the Frenchman to take advantage of important moments, especially if Fritz tired towards the end of the game, which turned out to be crucial.

Mpetshi Perricard broke his opponent’s serving in a dramatic 11th game of the second set in which Fritz slipped a 30/0 lead and struggled to store winners in the slow conditions. The World No. 37 then had to successfully pack a victory in which he fired 12 a aces and did not get a breaking point, according to Infosys ATP statistics.

“My record was not good for that, 0-6 [against Top 10 players]”Said Mpetshi Perricard.” Some competitions were heavy losses for me. I was very close [Lorenzo] Musetti, against [Fritz] At Wimbledon, and I had many things to improve. I tried to do a few things better than at Wimbledon, and it worked today.

“It was a tough match, physical and mental, but I did well and I am very happy with it.”

Although the defeat of the third round in Shanghai is a setback in Fritz’s bid to guarantee the qualification for the Nitto ATP final, the American remains well placed to reach the season finale. He is fifth in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, 450 points free from Musetti in the last qualifying place.

The next opponent of Mpetshi Perricard will be another hopeful Turin, Holger Rune, who also enjoyed a Sunday success in Shanghai. The 10th placed Dane survived the difficult circumstances to let Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4 sink to reach the fourth round for the second consecutive year.

With his victory, the 22-year-old Rune earned five profit on tour level against the same opponent for the first time in his career. He leads Humbert 5-0 in their Lexus ATP Head2head series, with two of those triumphs in 2025 (Indian Wells, Shanghai).

“We are both Europeans, so we are not completely used to this kind of weather, but I just told myself that it is the same for him and I will just try to stay strong,” said Rune when he was asked about the humidity of Shanghai. “Focus on my serve. Push when it matters, if it matters less, try to save some energy.

“I think today I had a good balance to play aggressively and let him work at the same time, let him run because we both feel when we run in this kind, it is harder. So, a very sweaty day, but very happy to get through. No more excuses.”

In other early Sunday games, Gabriel Diallo and Zizou Berg also moved forward. Diallo moved forward after his opponent David Goffin retired when he lagged 0-3 in the first set. The next opponent of the Canadian will be Bergs, that 19th seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (1), 6-3 conquered.
