The Southwestern monsoon (SWM) is likely to continue on 13 May 2025 to the South Andaman Zee, Nicobar Islands and some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the latest update of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Southwestern monsoon (SWM) is likely to continue on 13 May 2025 to the South Andaman Zee, Nicobar Islands and some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the latest update of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the weather department, the southwestern monsoon can be on 27 May, four days earlier than the normal start date of Kerala. The with division has also predicted that in 2025 the monsoon is expected to bring above normal to excess rainfall.

State start of the monsoon

Due to the trends from the past, the southwestern monsoon usually first arrives in Kerala and then will cover the entire country in mid -July. After the arrival in Kerala, the SWM spreads across South India – including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka – in the coming days.

After this, the monsoon is progressing along the western coat – Maharashtra and Gujarat. States including Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh also experience the arrival of the monsoon around July. The southwestern monsoon then gradually reaches the northern states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

According to the weather department, the monsoon will probably cover the entire country at the end of June.
