Johnson led the 1984-90 team, emphasized by the ring of ’86 and 108 victories in the regular season.

He ended his mason career with the best management record (595-417) in franchise history.

His victories remain the most in the history of Mets.

“He took a chance when I was 19,” said Dwight Throwing. “Davey was not afraid to make a difficult decision. I know I would not have had the career that I did without him.”

“Without a doubt he saved my career,” said Keith Hernandez, who called Johnson the first team captain in Mets History. “He let me be on the field. He knew when he had to be tough and when he had to do it easier. It was a pleasure to play for him.”

Johnson played 13 years before he manages the Mets, Reds, Orioles, Dodgers and Nationals for 17 seasons.

“It’s hard to go to the big competitions,” said Ron Darling. “Saving in the large competitions is even more difficult, and to ensure that you need a guardian angel. Davey was my guardian angel.”

“There is an opportunity” Garrett will be activated from the injured list on Sunday, the first day he is eligible, Mendoza said for a 6-3 loss against the Reds in Great American Ball Park.

Garrett, who was set aside with right elbow inflammation, is with the team after throwing a scoreless inning in which he had threw two with Double-a Binghamton on Thursday.

The Mets wanted to see the shape of their bullpen before they are committed to returning Garrett on Sunday.

The Mets have stolen a base in eight consecutive games, their longest streak since stealing a base in 11 straight ahead in 2009.

Brandon Nimmo, who lifted a sacrificial fly in the third inning, saw his career-high-tying 11 game Hitting Streak breaking.

Jose Siri played nine innings in his rehabilitation assignment for the first time on Saturday and hit 1-out-5 with a home run and three strikeouts while playing the center for Triple-a Syracuse.

The defensively gifted outfielder has been out with a broken tibia since April and comes “in the neighborhood,” said Mendoza.

But it didn’t sound like Siri’s activation is on the hands, and the club still wants to see him play back-to-back games and build his body.

“I know he wants to go back here,” said Mendoza about Siri, who went 7-out-23 in seven Minor League matches.
