After Davey Johnson – who led the Mets in 1986 to their most recent World Series title and made the final of the World Series of 1969 as a player to conquer the first championship of the Mets – died on Friday at 82, the memories.
“Davey Johnson was the biggest manager I have ever played for,” said Darryl Strawberry in a statement from the club. “He let us do our own thing. This is a sad day for the Mets and for the 1986 Mets family.”
Johnson led the 1984-90 team, emphasized by the ring of ’86 and 108 victories in the regular season.
He ended his mason career with the best management record (595-417) in franchise history.
His victories remain the most in the history of Mets.
“He took a chance when I was 19,” said Dwight Throwing. “Davey was not afraid to make a difficult decision. I know I would not have had the career that I did without him.”
“Without a doubt he saved my career,” said Keith Hernandez, who called Johnson the first team captain in Mets History. “He let me be on the field. He knew when he had to be tough and when he had to do it easier. It was a pleasure to play for him.”
Johnson played 13 years before he manages the Mets, Reds, Orioles, Dodgers and Nationals for 17 seasons.
He was admitted to the Mets Hall of Fame in 2010.
“Trieste day for the organization,” said Carlos Mendoza manager about Johnson, whom he said transformed “the organization and [put] It is back in the winning mode. “
Steve and Alex Cohen said Johnson brought a “calm trust and immovable faith” to the club.

The defensively gifted outfielder has been out with a broken tibia since April and comes “in the neighborhood,” said Mendoza.
But it didn’t sound like Siri’s activation is on the hands, and the club still wants to see him play back-to-back games and build his body.
“I know he wants to go back here,” said Mendoza about Siri, who went 7-out-23 in seven Minor League matches.
