Meet RAD: Rivian’s new division set to push boundaries

  • RAD stands for Rivian Adventure Department.
  • The team consists of Rivian designers, engineers and adventure enthusiasts.
  • RAD is a Skunkworks division that aims to push the boundaries of what Rivian vehicles can achieve.

Since its launch in 2009, Rivian has aggressively challenged its production and prototype vehicles. The department responsible for these efforts finally has a name: the Rivan Adventure Department, or RAD.

The RAD team consists of designers, engineers and real adventure enthusiasts. Rivian views RAD as a public-facing Skunkworks division tasked with pushing its vehicles to the limits and beyond.

This entrepreneurial spirit started six years ago, when Rivian took a few R1T prototypes to the bottom of South America. Since then, Rivian vehicles have competed in (and won) events such as the Rebelle Rally and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

RAD’s latest assignment is set in Big Sky, Montana. The team is present at the FAT Ice Race with its new quad bike R1S. It’s easy to recognize the RAD Rivian as it now has a nice paint scheme, along with a RAD logo on the door.

The name is equal parts pretty awesome and a little cheesy. Either way, it’s nice to see Rivian embracing the performance capabilities of its vehicles in all kinds of different ways. And the engineers can use all the insights from the RAD team to make their vehicles even better.

Engine1 takes: Every car manufacturer needs a team that focuses on the fun side of cars. Whether it’s motorsports, adventure or unique lifestyle experiences, an automaker must focus on what makes it attractive to its given customer base.

Rivian makes capable, fun electric vehicles, and we look forward to more examples in the RAD livery. Now if only the technical team would understand that a car with Apple CarPlay is also fantastic.
