Management selection: a broader opportunity

The Twins are looking for a new manager. Regardless of who they choose, I’m glad they’re interviewing some people. Hopefully, as they explain how they would handle things in the dugout and in the clubhouse, most of them will give their candid take on “what’s wrong with the Twins right now?”

I wish they had done a similar hiring process when they elevated Zoll to the (meaningless) GM title on the nameplate on his desk, instead of apparently reflexively hiring from within.

Now I hope Falvey is able to synthesize from these snippets what they need to say around the league, because he drove this franchise into the ditch and currently qualifies as a competent but below-average Major League manager at best.

I know it’s red meat to dare to call Falvey ‘competent’, but that’s what he is, no less but no more. I’d consider firing him if I knew an above-average slam-dunk alternative; but chances are we’ll replace him with another enthusiastic up-and-coming member of someone else’s FO, which is how we got here in the first place.

If I were in Joe Pohlad’s shoes, I would want a debrief from Falvey on what he learned from the management conversations, and specifically what he plans to do to improve himself. What will be his special sauce in the future? Because it certainly hasn’t been drafting, trades or development – some hits, but a hell of a lot of misses.

When I talked about sustainable excellence in 2016, I hoped he had some real ideas on that front; It turns out he only told them that to get the job and that he’s just like anyone else who has to rely on fueling and rebuilding every ten years – just like any other executive who isn’t in a major market. Fool me once, shame on you, right?
