There are currently many rumors going around about the search for Twins management. Will they go with a previous Twins coach like Shelton? Will they go back to the Twin’s Way and watch Punto? Will they step outside the organization and get a fresh perspective on someone like Vázquez? With all these options and more, one thing Falvey should be aware of in this regard is that the Twins are in pretty bad company when it comes to diversity in their manager and general managers. Here are some compositions:

Current year

In 2025, 8 of the MLB teams had varied managerial tenures:

Boston Red Sox – Alex Cora
Chicago White Sox – Will Venable
Houston Astros – Joe Espada
Los Angeles Angels – Ron Washington
Los Angeles Dodgers – Dave Roberts
New York Mets – Carlos Mendoza
St. Louis Cardinals-Oliver Marmol
Washington Nationals – Dave Martinez

That’s not such a bad thing, because they are among the 73% of teams that did not have a diverse workforce in 2025. Let’s take a deeper look and see how they stack up compared to all time:

MLB History

In all of MLB history, there are only five teams that have never had a diverse Manager hire:

Athletics
Diamond ridges
Phillies
Twins
Yankees

That makes us one of the 16.66% of teams that have never had a diverse managerial appointment. If you take these 5 teams and also look at their General Manager, you end up with just 2 franchises that have never had a diverse hire in their Manager or General Manager positions:

Athletics
Twins

It doesn’t look great to be one of only two teams to never hire a diverse talent as a Manager or General Manager, as they rank in the bottom 6.66% of teams in this regard.

History of twins

Another thing that makes this look particularly bad for the Twins is that the previous owner of the Twins stated that the reason the team is in Minnesota is racism:

Quote

“I’ll tell you why we came to Minnesota. It was when we found out you only had 15,000 blacks here. Black people don’t go to ball games, but they fill a naughty ring and sing such a chant that it scares the hell out of you. We came here because you got good, hard-working white people here” – Calvin Griffith

It’s not a good idea that a team that moved to its current location due to racism never had a diverse hire in its leadership positions.

Conclusion

I don’t think the Pohlad family is racist and I don’t think Falvey is racist, but I’m uncomfortable with the Twins when it comes to the diversity in the Manager/GM positions. This is an easy problem to solve. If we appreciate a coach coming back from the Falvey admin, we can look at Rowson instead of Shelton. If we appreciate a former Twins coming back, we could look at Hunter or Suzuki instead of Punto. If we value a voice outside the organization, we can look to Vázquez or others. Let’s not risk the Twins being an answer to the following trivial question: “Who is the last team to hire only white people for their Manager/GM positions?”
