Ronald Koeman felt “more disappointed than happy” after the Netherlands’ draw against Poland.
The Dutch missed out on the chance to qualify for next year’s World Cup final after ending up in a 1-1 stalemate in Warsaw.
Memphis Depay canceled out Jakub Kaminski’s opener as Ronald Koeman’s side remained three points clear of their opponents at the top of Group G heading into the final matchday.
The Netherlands, who also have a 13-goal lead, recorded an xG of just 0.74 from their eight attempts on Friday despite having just under 60% possession.
“I am more disappointed than happy,” said Koeman. “But on the other hand, we have taken another step towards qualification.

“It’s not easy to play against teams that defend very deep. We had to be patient; we had to try to attack in different ways, but we didn’t create enough good chances.”
“Poland showed its quality and playing style: fast breaks from defense to attack. That’s how we conceded the goal. This is how Poland likes to play, and that makes them dangerous.”
Poland will need a mathematical miracle to secure top spot in Group G, although they are now at least assured of a play-off spot.
“I am satisfied. Compared to our first meeting in the Netherlands, we held the ball better and created more chances,” said coach Jan Urban.
“We had to make some changes because we had some players injured and some suspended, but the players who came on showed their quality. So again, I’m very happy.”
