Jurgen Klopp congratulated Pep Guardiola on his 1,000th game in football management, calling the Manchester City boss “an inspiration” for managers.

The 54-year-old will reach the milestone when his team host reigning champions Liverpool at Eastlands in the Premier League on Sunday.

Klopp and Guardiola were involved in a storied rivalry in Germany and England before the former Reds boss retired in 2024.

The German tactician has inflicted more defeats on his counterpart than any other head coach. He defeated his teams at Bayern Munich and City twelve times with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp sends heartfelt message to Guardiola ahead of 1000th match

“Welcome to the 1000 club,” Klopp said via a video message on Sky Sports. “I can’t believe you’re so young and have already achieved this incredible milestone.

“I probably don’t need to say that I achieved it 81 games ago. It’s probably the only time I arrived before you, but it’s all good, it’s all good.

“I’ve said it a million times: it was a pleasure and an honor to meet you so many times during our careers. The most difficult matches, but the ones I enjoyed the most because you were and are an inspiration to all of us. The way you understand football is second to none. The desire you show every day is absolutely outstanding.”

“Another legendary club that you are now a member of, on to the next 1000!”

Guardiola admitted he misses Klopp and credited his former opponent with pushing him to make him a better coach.

“If I could choose one rival for this personal milestone, which I want to share with many people, they would be the best,” said the Catalan.

“I have been in this country longer than ever. Of course Barcelona’s impact on my life as a ball boy, footballer, manager and so on is clear and Bayern was also an incredible step.”

“But Liverpool, especially with Jurgen, have been the biggest rivals in this country and it couldn’t be better, to be honest. So fate decided that and it’s nice to experience that.”

“As for Jurgen or Pep’s side, I think we respected each other. I felt like Jurgen gave me a lot and I miss him.”

“He gave me a lot to beat that man, how much I have to think, work and do, to make it better.”
