Island tournament leads to final man versus woman – Table Tennis England

The recent Brian Warne tournament on the Isle of Wight resulted in a male-female showdown in the final.

Tim Giles reached the final alongside promising young player Ollie Lewis, while Tim’s wife Bev, along with Bryce Wilson, also reached the final.

This is an unusual but interesting tournament, where players team up for doubles based on their rating, with the highest ranked player being the lowest, the second highest with the second lowest and so on.

The two semi-finals were tough and exciting five-set thrillers, with Tim & Ollie beating Phil Stevens & Peter Clarke, then Bev & Bryce beating Paul White & Toby Payne. The final, with this ‘family showdown’, will be played on the island’s annual Finals Night in April.

This tournament came just three days after the conclusion of the island’s annual Doubles League, with the Nitons team of Tim & Bev Giles and Bryce Wilson (again) retaining the trophy they won the previous year. A very successful and enriching week for these three players.
