Dan Burn came in late in the first half on Sunday and won the ball. However, Sunderland defender Mukiele also slid in, albeit recklessly in his case. Knowing he had no chance to connect with the ball, but certainly to connect with Dan Burn.
Sure enough, Mukiele’s knee(s) came into contact with Burn’s chest/ribcage, leaving the Newcastle defender in obvious pain.
At half-time Dan Burn had breathing problems so he was sent to hospital to have it checked out.
It has now emerged late on Monday afternoon that the Newcastle defender has suffered a worrying double injury.
In a media exclusive, Craig Hope of The mail has revealed that Dan Burn has suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung.
When you saw Burn’s reaction at the time, you had to worry.
It is very rare for him to seek treatment and even rarer for him to accept the need to be immersed.
But even though he tried to continue playing, it soon became clear that Dan Burn had to go off before half-time.
Just as well, actually, as if if he had played any longer he could have ended up in an even worse position.
After lengthy treatment on the field, Dan Burn tried to continue but was clearly in serious discomfort.
The Mail reports that Dan Burn could be out for up to six weeks.
With 12 Newcastle United games to go before we reach February 13 when we pass Fulham on Wednesday, Eddie Howe is struggling even more with his defensive options.
The Mail adds that with Botman, Lascelles, Krafth and Trippier also currently absent, Burn’s absence means Eddie Howe only has four senior defenders available. The back four that closed out Sunday’s match against Sunderland; Livramento, Thiaw, Schar and Hall.
