Is Volvo planning to sell a hybrid minibus in the US? New patent images suggest that this might be possible

  • The Volvo EM90 is a fully electric luxury minibus that is sold abroad.
  • Patent images submitted to the USPTO by Volvo seem to show a plug-in hybrid variant of the vehicle.
  • Volvo recently announced plans to build a new hybrid vehicle in the factory in South Carolina.

American consumers need more minibus options, and as a recent patent submitted by Volvo to the Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) of the United States, American car buyers can soon have a different family -friendly vehicle with sliding doors to consider. That is because the vehicle in the images below does not seem to be battery-electric Volvo EM90, but a plug-in hybrid variant of the minibus of the car maker that it sells abroad.

What does this write to us? Well, it’s that little recess on the right rear fender of these patent images. In contrast to the EM90 production, which includes a charging gate door on the left rear fender, these illustrations show a van with doors on both rear fenders. We assume that the fuel cap mounted with the right -mounted person.

Is this EM90 plug-in hybrid (or is it HM90? XM90?) The “new hybrid” that Volvo is planning to produce towards the end of the decade in its factory in South Carolina? As minibus fans, we certainly hope that this is the case. That said, we bet that it is wise to lower our expectations, given the American market for new vehicles often prefer crossovers and SUVs above minibuses.

Yet a minibus can be in the making. After all, Mercedes plans to bring a luxuriously lined medium-sized van to the US next year, an example of the model in the form of the Vision V concept. Perhaps Volvo also wants to participate in this promotion.

We have contacted Volvo for comments and have to hear again. Nevertheless, we will continue to hope that Volvo will make our sliding door dreams come true, even if we feel that the Swedish brand will certainly abandon us when it inevitably rolls the “new hybrid” that rolls the line of the plant in South Carolina, another crossover of SUV that just has a better shot at the bottom line.
