PSG 1 Newcastle 1 – Wednesday January 28, 2026 8:00 PM
Direct fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘What an achievement after such a terrible start.
Shocking penalty (again) but a great save from Pope and then to counter so early in the game and come back like we did, it’s something to be proud of.
Well done guys.
We’re unlucky not to make the top 8, but finishing 12th wasn’t something I thought would happen at the start of the season.
Bring on the knockout stages!!’
Greg McPeake:
‘I couldn’t believe that started with that complete VAR nonsense.
Celebrated Pope’s save as if we had scored.
I was expecting a defeat and when I saw the team sheet I thought the focus was on the Liverpool game and the quest for the Champions League next season.
Great performance from Willock and what a team performance in the second half.
I felt we could and should have won the game after an excellent second half.”
Billy Miller:
‘Surprising formation and personnel changes seemed like they could have a spectacular counterproductive effect in the first ten minutes.
Especially now that the referee makes our domestic officials look like elite decision makers in comparison.
But we grew into it and Willock, who had a great game, got us level before half-time.
In the second half I felt like we were the most likely winners.
There’s no one I’d rather see that late chance fall, but Harvey Barnes, off balance, sliced a golden chance wide.
Excellent, disciplined, suffocating performances that make the European champions look average.
We couldn’t quite find the winner and will have to navigate the play-offs, but I’m confident we can do it over two legs.”
The armchair fan:
‘Incredibly proud. We took on the European champions away from home and beat them.
Bring on the play-offs!’
GTone:
‘The boys worked a shift tonight and deservedly deserved a point.
I’m sure everyone will mention him, so I won’t… but that was quite a refereeing performance.
Too bad we weren’t really lucky with the shots at the end of the game.’
Matt Busby said…:
‘Stalemate at the Parc de Princes as we remain undefeated against the French aristocrats, although that well-deserved point is not enough to automatically advance to the last sixteen.
That we denied PSG also finishing in the top 8 is certainly some consolation, if only because of the way the Parisians were assisted by another disgraceful referee.
We couldn’t have started worse and conceded a penalty. Although it was saved superbly by Nick Pope, he was unable to stop Vitinha’s effort as it looked like our entire midfield and defense were going crazy.
After weathering that early storm we grew into the match and there were some fantastic performances from those in black and white, Joe Willock with a great header to draw us level and Anthony Gordon causing PSG all kinds of problems after coming on as a second half substitute.
We can certainly take a huge amount of encouragement from that performance as our season progresses. It may be brutal, but it’s magical at the same time.’
David Punton:
‘A performance we can be proud of: a draw at the home of the European champions in the Parc de Princes in Paris.
It was a turbulent second half from United and Barnes should have given us a famous victory. Oh, that that went in!
The saying: Eddie Howe will guide us to the play-offs and give us a great opportunity to progress in the competition. We have been placed for the play-off draw.
It was also an atonement for Villa’s defeat.
Miley was excellent, as was Ramsey, his best match yet. A point despite missing Bruno and Joelinton.
It was achieved despite the sad referee from Slovenia and the VAR.
And let’s not forget: a stunning penalty save from Nick Pope to deny PSG.
An exciting evening for the club in one of the most iconic cities in the world.
I would have drawn here all day.
I’m happy for Joe Willock tonight. Not his best season, but he figured things out in Paris.”
Tony Mallabar:
“Not two disappointed to finish in the top 8, especially after missing two late chances. But we took the game into PSG’s second half and can be proud of that performance.”
Simon Ritter:
‘A few minutes before and after half-time the dream became reality, thanks to a fine header from Joe Willock, a genuine player subject to shocking abuse.
When Gordon and Barnes showed up late, we were the better team and had more chances to score.
Should our two best players have been on from the start? We’ll never know, even if their replacements did a good job.
No one in a black and white shirt has had a bad game against the European champions and no one can dispute that we deserved a decent, winnable draw in the play-offs.
If only Barnes had turned that late, late coincidence into reality, I would believe in fairy tales.”
