Eddie Howe was a proud man on Saturday at almost 6pm.
Newcastle United boss sees his team finally cross the line in the fourth round of the FA Cup: “We didn’t give up. It was a classic FA Cup game [whilst] Extra time was probably the last thing either manager wanted, the priority was trying to get through it. It’s important. These months will be determined by your professionalism and your will to win.”
Aaron Ramsdale had mixed fortunes in this match as he conceded three goals but also made some important saves.
Then when it came to the penalty shootout, he prevented Bournemouth’s penalties three times, sending United through.
Eddie Howe says about signing his loan: “Aaron made big saves for us and sometimes in a very close win like this great things can happen.”
With so many games to be played in quick succession and many players missing or recovering, it has been a delicate balancing act that will continue as United compete in four competitions.
Eddie Howe on making the selection decisions in the four competitions: “We have taken the right position so far, but we will assess it day by day. Obviously this is an area where we [especially] I didn’t want to lose any players, it was defensive and we lost two in quick succession. We discuss things every day and we will try to make the right decision. I think we need players to play games and we need enough cover.”
The way the match played out, it was anything but an FA Cup match where Newcastle United were able to give the key players the ideal amount of rest and protect all players as much as possible.
Eddie Howe admits: “Unfortunately today we are putting a number of players at risk just because of extra time. That means for every player on the field the risk increases in extra time the more you play. We would like to have enough bodies to reduce that risk, but at the moment we don’t have the options.”
One of those who didn’t even come close to extra time was Tino Livramento, who had to leave within an hour due to an injury.
With Lewis Hall replacing him, Eddie Howe says this about Tino: “It looks serious to the point where he will be out for the next game and the games after that… it looks like a hamstring problem.”
The man of the moment, Harvey Barnes, scored United’s first and third goals and sent his penalty in the shootout.
With four goals in his last two games, the former Leicester winger impressed Eddie Howe: “A great performance, he is always a scorer of important goals and he thought his second tonight would be the winner but it was not to be. He took a penalty in the shootout [as well]”
After qualifying for the Champions League and winning a trophy last season, Newcastle United have progressed in the FA Cup after five months, are in the top six of the Premier League, are a semi-final away from a third Carabao Cup final in four years, and are at least guaranteed a play-off place for the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to play.
Eddie Howe sums it all up: “I think it’s a great time to be involved with Newcastle United. We have the Champions League on the horizon, the will to win has taken us to the latter stages of the League Cup, we have every reason to be excited about the future. The result [against Bournemouth] just keeps the good feeling going and we want to keep the momentum going, we’ve been through two semi-finals [against Arsenal] Last season that was incredible.”
