‘Even in the shootout we were in front for a while, but…’ Andoni Iraola

After a comeback win against Spurs on Wednesday, Andoni Iraola was hoping to follow up with an FA Cup win at St James’ Park.

Those hopes were high when Bournemouth bounced back from Harvey Barnes who opened the scoring after 50 minutes.

Andoni Iraola saw his team come back with two goals, six minutes apart, and had to finish the last 22 minutes, plus extra time…

Anthony Gordon broke the hearts of the visitors by making it 2-2 in extra time.

Newcastle United then scored late in extra time and Bournemouth even later to force penalties, which Eddie Howe’s side eventually won 7–6 after nine penalties each.

Andoni Iraola reflects: “Even during the shootout we were in front for a while, but it wasn’t meant to be…”

Summing up the whole occasion and the competition in general, the Cherries boss says: “This is the FA Cup. I am very proud to be part of this match because it is true that we are out of the competition, but I don’t think we can ask much more from the players. I think we gave everything.”

In a penalty shootout it is the one who best controls the nerves and Andoni Iraola says: “The team that finished the game, we probably didn’t have many penalty specialists. After the first two or three penalties it was a matter of choosing between players who have probably never taken penalties or taken very few penalties. You never know how they will react.”
