Miracle worker Eddie Howe even achieved this with Newcastle United

Eddie Howe has transformed Newcastle United.

No cup final for 24 years? Two in three seasons and now just one step away from a third in four seasons.

No Champions League football for more than twenty years? Two qualifications in three seasons for Eddie Howe.

No trophy in 56 years? Sorted with a dominant performance and Wembley victory over Liverpool, who were runaway Premier League winners.

Isn’t there anything wonder man Eddie Howe can’t do?

Apparently not.

In the past, when Newcastle United found themselves in a penalty shootout, you took for granted what would happen next…

But under Eddie Howe?

On their way to the 2023 Carabao Cup final in the 2022/23 season, Newcastle United won 3-2 on penalties against Crystal Palace.

The following season (2023/24) was a bit of a setback, losing 4-2 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

However, that same season a 4–3 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park in the FA Cup.

On route to another Wembley final, Sean Longstaff scored the final penalty as United won 4-3 on penalties away at Forest in the Carabao Cup.

Now Saturday a remarkable match that ends with a 7-6 penalty result against Bournemouth, Aaron Ramsdale making three huge saves.

In his four seasons in charge of Newcastle United, Eddie Howe triumphed with four fantastic penalties and just one setback.

It’s almost as if Eddie Howe has given his players the mentality to get his team through these high-pressure shootouts.

If you think four out of five are good, you have to admit that it’s great as far as Newcastle United are concerned, given their record in senior competitions (not ZDS or Texaco Cup etc) before Eddie Howe came along.

LOST 5-2 on penalties in 1969/70 away to Pecsi Dozsa (Fairs Cup)
LOST 7-6 in 1979/80 at home to Sunderland (League Cup)
LOST 4-3 in 1991/92 at home to Bournemouth (FA Cup)
LOST 4-2 in 1995/96 at home to Chelsea (FA Cup)
LOST 4-2 in 1998/99 at home to Blackburn (League Cup)
LOST 3-2 in 2002/03 at home to Everton (League Cup)
LOST 4-3 in 2003/04 at home to Partizan Belgrade (Champions League)
WON 5-4 in 2006/07 away at Watford (League Cup)
LOST 3-1 in 2016/17 away to Hull (League Cup)
LOST 4-2 in 2019/20 at home to Leicester (League Cup)
WON 5-4 in 2020/21 away at Newport (League Cup)
LOST 4-3 in 2021/22 at home to Burnley (League Cup)

There you have it: before Eddie Howe came along, Newcastle United had lost ten of their twelve penalty shootouts in major competitions.

To make matters worse, United had lost ALL eight shootouts at St James’ Park before Eddie Howe arrived!
