If you are looking for a new show to look at this early in the week, there is a new one that landed on Hulu and throws back to a legendary franchise in a way that is far from a cheap cash-in.
That would be Alien: earth Is Huluanother Alien project and not so long after Alien: RomulusBut it is the first TV series in its history. It is also extremely good, and I have even heard that it is called ‘the Andor of Alien’.
Certified fresh with a full 62 reviews in, Alien: earth has a 94% on rotten tomatoes. That is not only good for the current TV moment, but that means it is connected as the best rated Alien Project ever. That’s a draw with Alien with 94%, and just above Aliens with 93%. We are talking about projects that were released almost 40 years ago. Here is the list:
- Alien: Earth – 94%
- Aliens – 94%
- Alien – 93%
- Alien: Romulus – 80%
- Prometheus – 73%
- Alien: Covenant – 65%
- Alien resurrection – 55%
- Alien 3 – 44%
- Alien versus predator – 21%
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem – 12%
I wrote a similar article about a week ago, but then, Alien: earth Was at 90% and in third place instead. Now, with more reviews, the score has only disappeared upwardsThat is not really what you normally see with such a show like this. What is this all about? Here is the synopsis, as the show takes place for the original film from 1979 for two years:
“When a mysterious spaceship crashes on earth, Wendy and a Ragtag group tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that brings them face-to-face with the greatest threat to the planet.”
Interesting is that the only real ‘name’ in the cast is here Justified’s Timothy Olyphant, with the rest of the cast lower win. But the name behind it is Noah Hawley, who has so far done some of the wildest FX/Hulu shows Legion Unpleasant Fargo. Now he has set his sights on Alien, who now reveals better than one of them.
This is not a binge release, because that is usually not how Hulu rolls (except The bear). Today it has a double episode premiere and the rest of the eight episodes are broadcast until the end of September. A second season has not been Greenlit yet, but if it performs well, I would expect that it will happen. As far as we know, this is not planned as a limited series.
This will be a good one. I will have my own review soon.
UPDATE (8/14): Good, Alien: earth Has now been broadcast for everyone, not just critics, and it seems that some in the audience do not agree!
First, the overall critic score of Alien: earth has now fallen to a 92%, still super high but under both original Alien Movies.
Secondly, the audience scores are in and they are a much-last 77%, which is under the public score for the recent Alien: Romulus At an 85%. I think I am not so shocked, given that Hawley can make some division projects and there are aspects of the show that are overly trippy. I think there is some disconnection with the basic “kids in adult robot bodies” concept that can lead to a strange dialogue, but in the context of the show I find it absolutely logical.
I watched the first two episodes and loved them. The opening scene alone feels directly from 1979, and the rest of the show is intriguing and beautifully shot and scored. I can’t wait for more. Despite what these target group scores can say, I will absolutely recommend the show to every alien or sci-fi fan in general. It is really a great achievement of what I can see so far, and remember that critics have seen much more of the series so far than the audience.
