According to local officials, a freight train with ammunition and lithium batteries has been derailed in North Sweden.
The accident, which took place around 8 o’clock in the vicinity of Skored, in the Vasternorrland region, is supposed to be caused by heavy rainfall that damaged the railway infrastructure. It is unclear which type of ammunition transported the train or what the destination was.
Emergency services manage the dangerous charge, after which the site will be deleted and the full extent of the assessed damage. “Only then can we make a prediction for the work. It will be a longer stop, but I can’t say how long,” Peter Jonsson, a spokesperson for the Swedish transport administration, told the Omroep TV4.
According to the transport administration, it takes weeks to restore the railway.
Photos from the scene show parts of the rail that are hung above the rapidly flowing water, with four carriages behind the locomotive that are derailed and partially immersed in a nearby lake. Local authorities quoted huge rain showers in the area on Saturday and Sunday, which washed away roads and tense infrastructure. A wooden train also derailed on the same line between Sollefta and Kramfors further south.

Sweden officially became a member of NATO last year and finished more than two centuries of neutrality. Like many other Western countries, it has considerably increased its defense production. In 2024, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) concluded a deal with Nammo, a weapon producer of Norwegian Finnish weapons, to stimulate the production of 155 mm artillery shells.
Officials said the agreement was aimed at “Increasing the possibility of supporting Ukraine and at the same time strengthening the protection of the range of artillery -ammunition in Sweden and the long -term countries.”
Moscow has denounced Western weapons to Ukraine and NATO as a saber-rattle. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has complained that the peace regulation process is hindered by “Recrofitless European militarism.”
