Tropical Cyclone Fina is expected to change direction southwards towards the top of the Northern Territory on Thursday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).
BoM has warned that the cyclone remains a Category 2 storm, with sustained winds near the center of 95 km/h and gusts of up to 130 km/h.
“Tropical Cyclone Fina remains a Category 2 system and is moving slowly. It is expected to turn southwards today and then south-westwards towards the northern coast of the Top End,” the BoM said in an alert on Thursday morning.
“It should approach the Cobourg Peninsula and the Tiwi Islands on Friday, affecting areas along the north-west coast of the Northern Territory’s Top End.

“Fina is expected to maintain category two intensity in the coming days, but an increase to category three on Friday or Saturday as it closes in remains a possibility.”

Category two systems can generate gusts of 75mph to 100mph, causing minor damage to homes and significant damage to crops, signs, trees and caravans, as well as power outages.

Darwin has not experienced a cyclone since the Category 2 Marcus system caused power outages to almost 29,000 properties in March 2018.

‘Warning zones’

Cape Don to Maningrida, including the Cobourg Peninsula and Minjilang and Warruwi, are in the BoM warning zones, while the Tiwi Islands and Darwin east of Gunbalanya are in the observation zone.

BoM has warned the situation could worsen in the coming days, with destructive winds of up to 155km/h “possibly developing between Cape Don and Warruwi from Friday as the system approaches the coast, extending to the Tiwi Islands by early Saturday and possibly to Darwin later on Saturday”.

Flash flooding may also occur along coastal areas between the Tiwi Islands and Maningrida from Friday, then spread to the coast and adjacent inland areas across the western Top End, including Darwin, on Saturday.

Stock up on basic supplies

The Northern Territory Emergency Service (NTES) has advised those near and between Cape Don and Maningrida to “immediately commence or continue preparations, in particular securing boats and property, taking advantage of available daylight hours.”

NTES has also advised people in the Tiwi Islands and Darwin in eastern Gunbalanya to “consider what action to take if the cyclone threat increases”.

When the system makes landfall it will be the earliest time of year a cyclone has hit the NT since 1970.

Darwin residents have been stocking up on essentials including bottled water, bread and canned goods as they prepare to bunker down ahead of the cyclone, leaving supermarket shelves empty.
Additional police have been deployed to remote communities to ensure shelters are ready and have adequate food, water and spare batteries.
