The digital ministry has started discussions with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to develop a legal framework for autonomous vehicles in Malaysia, according to digital minister Gobind Singh Deo, reported Declared.
The transition to accepting autonomous vehicles requires early preparation in several areas, including safety standards, digital infrastructure and data protection, the minister said.
“We have already started discussions with JPJ with regard to what we call the autonomous vehicle network. In other countries we see vehicles without a driver working. In such scenarios we must consider how we can develop a legal framework to ensure that the ecosystem is suitable, especially in terms of safety and data protection,” Gobind said.
In March, the Ministry of Transport gazed the latest changes to the rules for motor vehicles (construction and use) under the 1987 Transport Act to ensure that national legislation is tailored to technology and innovation in the country’s automotive sector.
The changes were made in 2024 to include technical regulations with regard to the construction and use of autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles and energy -efficient vehicles, said deputy Minister of Transport that Hasbi Habibollah.
In September last year, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke stated that the Malaysian government is considering changing laws to support the digitization and development of autonomous vehicles. Loke said at the time that the Ministry of Transport was prepared to facilitate the development of autonomous vehicles in terms of legislation.
The Minister of Transport said last September that the issue of legal changes to support digitization and development of autonomous vehicles in Malaysia should be investigated by examples from other countries that already have a legal framework.
