Newcastle will host Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup tomorrow. The Magpies ended their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy last season after winning the League Cup at Wembley. Howe’s side reached the semi-finals of the League Cup again this season, but have struggled to make their mark in the FA Cup in recent years.
Newcastle have been knocked out in the third round three times in the last five seasons, with last season’s campaign ending in round five. Howe is determined to go deep in the FA Cup this season.
“For whatever reason we haven’t quite matched our success in the Carabao Cup. That’s a frustration for us and I thought we had a chance last year and the game we lost against Brighton was frustrating because we had done the hard work.”
“The FA Cup is a great competition. I think the first rounds are the hardest because we are surrounded by other games. We really have to make sure we focus on that because we want to do well and progress in every competition we play in.”
“If you go back to when I played in the third round of the FA Cup, that was a highlight. It was scheduled very early in January. I suppose playing in League One was your chance to grab a big moment and play against a Premier League team. It was a really massive moment in my career.”
“As you say, when you are managing at this level there are so many games and competitions that it has lost its self-contained feel. But I still feel that the FA Cup is a magical competition. That has never escaped me.”
“I still remember the FA Cups of the 1980s and how important they were. They were probably the most important games of the season. That still resonates with me. We want to experience those final stages of the competition.”
