How Much Alcohol Will Stop Weight Loss and Ketosis?
Depending on how much alcohol you drink, it can block fat burning for two days or more, and most alcohol has carbohydrates added to it.
A carbohydrate is only four calories per gram and that blocks your weight loss and that blocks your ketosis. Ethanol, pure alcohol, contains seven calories per gram.
But:
Ethanol does not immediately cause a peak in insulin.
It is not stored in the body.
It must be removed by enzymes made by the liver.
The body considers it a toxin. It is highly oxidative (it causes a lot of stress in the liver) – it also causes inflammation that can lead to cirrhosis and fatty liver disease.
It blocks fat burning. When alcohol is present in the body, it stops burning fat and shifts the focus to clearing the dangerous situation through the use of enzymes.
Your entire metabolism will be focused on getting rid of that alcohol and not on burning fat.
So depending on how much alcohol you drink, it can literally block that burning feeling for two days, even three or four days, because most alcohol has carbohydrates added to it.
Most people don’t just drink pure ethanol (alcohol); they drink beer, wine or other types of alcohol that contain a lot of sugar.
If you research the recommendation for drinking alcohol and all the benefits of drinking alcohol, our government will tell you that you should drink two drinks a day if you are a man, and one drink a day if you are a woman, and they will tell you that this actually benefits the cardiovascular system.
Recently, a new recommendation was made, based on another look at some of the research already available, which showed that the benefits of alcohol are actually non-existent.
In fact, it increases your risk of death.
Why the switch? When you see government research, realize that it is not as independent as you may think. They usually work with someone who helps fund the research and they actually work with the actual industry associated with that research. Realize that an alcohol-producing partner will not pay for research that says alcohol increases your risk of death.
There are no health benefits from ethanol. It will knock you out of ketosis for days. If you are going to drink, don’t do it often and realize that this will slow down your progress.
Dr. Berg recommends consuming alcohol without the added carbohydrates (drinks and snacks with added sugars). If you do, you’ll be out of fat burning for less time, especially if you don’t go overboard with drinking.
