Arsenal ensured they would be the table toppers for the celebrations thanks to a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday evening. Gyokeres’ goal meant the difference for the Gunners, as the Swedish striker emphatically converted a penalty after Jake O’Brien’s handball.
Mikel Arteta’s side have a two-point lead over Manchester City and Gyokeres has insisted there is still a lot of football to be played before Arsenal can even consider the table.
The Gunners have previously topped the table at Christmas four times, including twice in the last three seasons, failing to win the Premier League each time. In total, 17 of the 33 teams that topped the Premier League at Christmas won the title, a success rate of 52%.
“It’s always a good feeling to win football matches and be at the top of the table, but that doesn’t mean much because it’s still a long way to go. [there are] there are still many games to play,” Gyokeres said after the win over Everton.
“But we still have a lot of games around Christmas, so of course I’ll enjoy them… but not too much!”
Gyokeres discusses the decision to take responsibility for the penalties
Gyokeres took responsibility for the penalty, despite regular taker Bukayo Saka being on the field. Asked about that decision, the summer signing said: “We had a bit of a chat on the pitch. It was an easy conversation and then I took it. To be honest, I took one a few months ago and it was nice to get one again and score.”
“We don’t think about it too much, we just wait for the decision. Then you know it’s a punishment and you just wait for the normal procedure. Nothing special really.”
