Invercargill HRC will host nine races at Ascot Park tomorrow and local trainer Kirstin Green should play a role.

Five-year-old gelding Shergar (Bettor’s joy) comes close to victory. He ran a solid fourth place at Riverton on Sunday and Race One tomorrow looks like a winnable race for him.

“That’s true, but he’s been knocking on the door for a long time. He’s going to win a race, but I’m not sure if it’s this week or next week,” Green said.

Garonne (The best Madrik) trots well. He was beaten by the nose at Riverton and will get his chance to take his first win in Race Three.

“I’ve been very happy with him in his last two starts. He’s done it. He’s in the same boat as Shergar. He’s all over the place, but I’m not sure which day he lands.”

In Race Four, Skinny Dippin (On the coast) gets her chance through one draw. She finished third on her debut behind a pair of smart horses in Side Hustle and Ebonezy. After finishing seventh at her next start, she was pinned, but has had two practices in preparation for tomorrow’s race.

“She’s a sweet filly. She just hates the guts, so we’ve been working on that. She should run a pretty good race. She’s our best bet.”

The Orange Rough (Betterthancheddar) was spotted on his last start at Ascot Park. He pulls the midfield in Race Five.

“I’m very happy with him. He came very strong at the line. If he had been a little more adept at running, I think he could have made it. I took some time to work him out, but I think he’s starting to understand everything.”

Bobbies Rock (A rock and roll dance) represents a small but handy field in Race Six.

“I was initially disappointed with last week’s run at Riverton, but I watched the replay and considering how hard it was to get up the rail, there was probably a bit more merit in the run. I’m going to let him rip and see what’s there. I think he’s pretty ready.”

Trotting mare Spiritinthesky (Father Patrick) got out late at Riverton and ran home well for second place. She has a good record on the short course and believes she has a chance in Race Seven.

“Really happy with her. She is consistent and I think she will be in the top three.”
