In one day characterized by a new beginning, Everton baptized their ultramodern Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. The historical occasion was led by a stellar debut performance of a new loan signing by Jack Grealish, who gave both assists in a man-of-the-match display.
Thousands of supporters gathered hours before the kick-off for the very first Premier League match of the club in the new house, a moment of hope after 133 years in Goodison Park. Grealish, on loan from Manchester City, was the center of the buzz for the competition and he delivered the high expectations.
The 29-year-old, who will be motivated by a desire to impress England manager Thomas Tuchel prior to the World Cup of the following summer, immediately recaptured the form that he saw a Premier League star. After just 23 minutes, Grealishe drove into the penalty area and delivered an accurate cross to Iliman Ndiaye, who ended up close. Grealish’s second assist later came in half, a short pass to James Garner, who scored with a powerful 25 -meter strike.
Grealish’s impact further than assists
Grealish’s two assists in his Everton debut were the same as his entire Premier League Assist Tally of the last two seasons in Manchester City. But his performance went beyond the Statblad. He showed the willingness to enter into defenders, a quality that he thought was suffocated under Pep Guardiola.
“I felt really good,” Grealisk told reporters after the game. “I don’t want to say that I have not felt free before, but I could float there, I could do what I want more or more and play with a little freedom, take more risks. I feel that I have done that.”
Manager David Moyes was happy with the performance in his second Stint at the club. “We want to add that extra quality and that is what we are trying to do,” he said. “Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack both played extremely well. We are very happy that we add a little more quality.”
Grealisk also showed a new dedication to defensive tasks, winning possession a team -high seven times and tied most of the tackles with three. His performance earned him a standing ovation of the crowd of more than 50,000 when he was replaced in a stop time.
The victory marks a perfect start for Everton in their new stadium and offers a much needed boost after their opening day defeat against Leeds United. For Grealisk, it was a crucial step in revitalizing his career and a memory of his unique talents.
