Debut winner Taj Mahal seems to go one step further in Miracle Wood

Taj Mahal an impressive winner on his debut on February 6, will face a step up in the class on February 21 when he takes on five rivals in the $100,000 Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park.

The Nyquist Colt enters the 1-mile race on the heels of a first special weight win by 4 1/4 lengths for trainer Brittany Russell. Russell, who also had the morning line favorite Balboa introduced, said in a Feb. 18 release that the last colt would scratch. Daily Racing Form reported that the colt would compete in the $300,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) on February 28.

“It’s definitely not a move for me to run one back so quickly after a first run,” Russell said. “I haven’t had a chance to rest him yet, but he’s been training well. He came out of the race great. He came to me this morning with his head between his legs, bucking and playing. He’s clearly happy and his energy is good. They’re bred as stakes horses, so I’m trying to take it a step further and see what he’s made of.”

The Florida-bred colt was a $525,000 purchase at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Donato Lanni, agent for SF Bloodstock/Starlight Racing/Madaket Stable. His ownership group now also includes Stonestreet Stables, Bashor Racing, Certain Stables, Golconda Stable, Waves Edge Capital and Catherine Donovan.

Eagle Up Stables, London Reid Thoroughbreds and Non Stop Stables Let’s go Lando comes into the race fresh, winning his last start on January 10 by 6 lengths in an optional claims race at Laurel. The Maryland-bred gelding fired off a shot workout on Feb. 14, covering 5 furlongs in 1:02.

“I got him neutered (last summer), and he’s matured and really gained weight,” trainer Gary Capuano said. ‘We thought about him a lot early on. He wanted to stretch out. Just a stable horse.’

The Law School Stakes winners and Peach Tie will meet in Stakes across the country

Law School And Peach tie both impressive stakes winners in their last starts, will compete one race earlier in the $100,000 Wide Country Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Law School, a daughter of Mitole won the Parx Future Stars Filly Division Stakes by 7 lengths on December 30. Before that victory, the Jamie Ness trainee won an optional claims race by 14 1/4 lengths at Laurel.

“As soon as we stretched her out, she got a lot better,” Ness said. “I think seven-eighths is the lowest we can get. I would like to go longer, but we’ve been off for a few months now, so it’s probably a good stepping stone back.”

Law School was purchased by Chris Melton for just $5,000 at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale.

The Estate of Brereton C. Jones’ Peach Tie enters the race with three straight wins, with her latest win coming in the Gin Talking Stakes on Dec. 27 at Laurel. She won the 7 furlong race by 8 lengths.

The Russell-trained filly will be ridden by her husband Sheldon Russell.

Recent first winner Strike a rose is expected to scratch, leaving a field of just four fillies.
