Spain went down an unlikely comeback from 2-0 to Stun Denmark in Davis Cup qualifying last weekend in Marbella.

The host country was in a considerable gap after Pablo Carreno Busta lost to Holger Rune and Jaume Munar fell against Elmer Moller on Saturday. The tide, however, changed to turn with the double rubber from Sunday. Munar and Pedro Martinez came back from a set to beat August Holmgren and Johannes Ingildsen 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. That was the scene for even more heroic deeds of Martinez, who recovered from a 5-3 deficit in the third set and a match point on the DANE serve before he saves 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3) Triumphing. Carreno Busta defeated Moller 6-2, 6-3 in a decisive fifth rubber.

“The feeling was incredible,” Martinez assured. “I have fought all my life to be here today. I have done everything I could and left all my heart on the field … The feeling (in Davis Cup) is completely different. Maybe I will be more nervous, but this adrenaline … gives me an extra motivation to play full. I feel the nerves, but I can deal with this motivation.”

Spain joins Italy, Argentina, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium in the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna this fall.

In a Davis Cup strop on a lower level, Joao Fonseca led a visiting Brazilian side to a victory over Greece. With the home team with 2-1, Stefanos Tsitsipas stood for a must-win situation against Fonseca. However, the teenager turned out to be too good in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

Brazil has a place in next year’s qualification for the final.
