CT: Maggie’s Girl has the highest benefit position

Double Spirit hopes to pull off an upset and take its win streak to four

The speedy Maggie’s Girl is going for the 15th win of her stellar career – and third in a row – in Friday’s $38,900 allowance at the Charles Town Races. But to get it, she must face Double Spirit, who arrives with a three-race heater of his own.

The 6 ½ furlong event for fillies and mares aged four years and over is the seventh in a solid eight-race programme.

Maggie’s Girl (7-5) looks like the one they need to catch. The six-year-old has won 14 of 26 lifetime starts and 14 of 24 locally, and she has a pair of front-runner victories over a single-turn distance of 4 ½ furlongs. She’s a pure speed type who has muscled her way to most of those wins, and that running style suits a 6½ furlong setup that has been friendly to early pace types. The concern is the layoff: she hasn’t raced since October and shows only one recent work, a three-furlong shot on January 5.

Double Spirit (5-2) is the obvious danger. Since being stretched to two turns, the four-year-old has won her last three starts on the track by a total of 24 ¾ lengths. Most recently, she dominated a local benefit on January 21 by breaking alert and making it clear. She is 2-for-2 at this distance and has tactical speed that should push her into the favorite.

Serenade Me (3-1) could be the upset. She leaves a career-best 81 BRISnet speed figure in a strong second place behind Laurel stakes winner Miss Harriett and consistently finishes with interest. Her finishing blow makes her dangerous if the top pair connects early.

Snappin buttons (6-1) is the wildcard. She owns the highest speed rating in her lifetime in the field and has faced tougher company in the stakes and allowance races in New York, but she hasn’t run in seven months and is making her first start for a new stable.

Moonlit Kiss and Heart’s Compass round out the line-up. Moonlit Kiss are seven-time local winners but abandon a dull effort as fourth favorites, while Heart’s Compass returns from a layoff after a closing win but has pace figures that are below par for this level.

Maggie’s Girl is probably the speed of the speed, and by breaking an early foot outside the others, jockey Larry Reynolds should be able to find the most advantageous spot. If Maggie’s Girl breaks away, she’s the most likely winner. When she calms down, Double Spirit is ready to strike – and Serenade Me will be waiting late when the pace drops.
