As with all sports, understanding our strengths and weaknesses is essential to improving. Golf is probably that individual sport where you need support other than your own to succeed. Yes, there are some outside influences (lessons being the biggest) that will push our game to the next level and then the next. However, without consistency in several areas, your game will stagnate for many golf seasons. Many of you already know this, but feel it is important to discuss this topic for the benefit of new or inexperienced athletes taking up golf.
The first and most important is consistency of effort. Like all things we try to master, small, intentional steps toward goals are the key to moving the benchmarks to a better place. Golf surly fits into this category. Practicing specific skills regularly is very important. I don’t know a single golfer who plays only once a month or even once a week and whose game is sharp and trending upward toward improvement. Even when I put my clubs aside for a few weeks for a vacation, I notice a significant decline in my game. Yes, I can still hit the ball well, but my scoring touch needs a lot of work. Imagine how a beginner feels when he plays sparingly.
Next is consistency of intention. The actions of a golf swing, whether hitting the long ball or placing the green, require a lot of muscle memory. As golfers, we practice enough that we don’t have to think about our golf swing, but can focus on higher mental functions such as small aiming points, how the ball will react to certain conditions or gathering information from the golf stroke of our playing partners. Without the basics of understanding how to swing a golf club, improvement is unlikely to occur quickly. Therefore, intentional consistent practice with an emphasis on improving our skills is one way to lower golf scores.
Finally, the consistency of mental actions is important. Developing knowledge without practical experience does not bode well for a golfer. Knowing things without understanding how to apply the knowledge is actually a step backwards for a golfer. We can always talk about a good game, but when it comes to the execution of those skills, we make mistakes. Just like consistent effort, taking the first step toward our golf goals is important. There must be a mental and physical component to our golf game. Without both aspects working together, our game will never truly reach its full potential.
Golf is a fun and exciting sport. It’s one where you can play sparingly and still have fun. However, if you really want to improve, you will need more time and play every now and then. Mental, physical and intention consistency are required to varying degrees. Without some action in these three categories, you will find your golf game stagnating. The final choice of how much we want to improve is personal; there are no wrong answers and only you can decide.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
