(By Larry Hodges)
Don’t be that guy who spends years beating shots but also lacks again, balls over the table, or out or in the net, and never consistently puts them together. If you swing wild in practice, even if you take the most photos, you just practice erratic. To sharpen your photos, you must be able to do the same shot again and again, and against all kinds of incoming balls. If you are even a bit erratic in practice, that means a lot in the uncertainty and pressure of a match. (In practice you often get the same balls again and again. Not in a match.) That means practicing at a speed where you are consistent and then build it up. Ultimately, with practice and good shape, you can essentially relax in every shot, even power shots and make them easy.
View the top players and notice how little they press on every shot. That is a good shape. Try to do the same. Remember that if you do an exercise and take pictures everywhere, you practice like a poor player. If you are not consistent with your recordings, you will practice inconsistency in your recordings. Be that guy who is consistent, even if it means at a slower pace and see how your game improves. Added bonus – if you are a consistent player, stronger players will want to practice with you. Who wants to practice with someone who hits balls everywhere?
