Montreal – It took a while for Madison Keys to find her powerful Groove against the varied and difficult game of landwoman Caty McNally.
But in the end she came on top of her in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory that placed her in the fourth round against No. 11 Seed Karolina Muchova on Sunday.
In fact, it is perhaps the perfect prep match for keys, where Muchova plays a non-dissimilar style.
Both served at almost 70 percent. And for a long time it seemed that McNally had a shot at the upset.
But then Keys began to fire winners that even McNally’s top -retrieval skills could not handle.
This is what it looked like. The crowd really enjoyed this.
McNally came in Montreal on a 10-match-winning series. She won the WTA 125 on grass in Newport. And then she won an ITF tournament of $ 100,000 in Evansville, Indiana the next week.
She got the late start on Tuesday because of that Evansville-Run and was in a fight with another American, the biggering Alycia Parks, which she got 9-7 in the third set of Tiebreak.
After that 2h43 marathon in the big heat, she had to come back the next day and she easily took care of the solid Rebecca Sramkova.
Comeback of elbow surgery
McNally has had a great run, usually at the lower levels. Since the loss in the first round of the Australian Open (which she entered on an injury protection ranking, where her live ranking was no. 540), she was 38-12 before she lost to Keys.
An elbow problem endangered McNally’s turnout in the ranking – firstly she played with pain. Then they tried to treat it conservatively. And finally she was operated on.
McNally from Wimbledon was all the way to Linz in 2023, at the beginning of February 2024. And then she was back from mid -February to November, when she returned to a WTA 125 in Midland, Michigan with her rank outside the top 1000.
Someone on the way she also lost her clothing sponsorship agreement.
She will only be 50 points from return to the Top 100, when the new rankings come after Montreal. It is too late to open the American directly. And if we have the rules well, she has allowed her allowed Grand Slam -Slots to her protected ranking (although she went out a second time, she can totally reset that).
But it is difficult to see that someone catches her for the US Open Wild-Card Race, even if the grass title is not counting for that. She earns 65 ranking points for her effort on the third round
