Chief Justice BR Gavai’s Neef, 13 judges take an oath at Bombay High Court

Chief Justice of India Br Gavai’s cousin Raj Wakode and 13 other judges were sworn in on Tuesday as judges of the Bombay High Court. This is a rare opportunity where so many judges are sworn in a high court at the same time.

Acting supreme judge Shree Chandrashekhar took the oath, a week after their appointment by President Droupadi Murmu. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended their appointment on August 19 and the central government had cleared the names a week later.

With the new additions, the power of the High Court judges is now at 82, still 12 less than the sanctioned power of 94.

After the sworn, all newly appointed judges were informed about their sitting on different banks of the Supreme Court. They will soon start hearing things while they are sitting on division banks with senior jury members.

Justice Venegavkar worked as an public prosecutor of Maharashtra and often appeared for directorate (ED) and other central agencies. Justice Patil appeared for the National Investigation Agency, while Justice Shirsat also represented central agencies such as the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in leading matters.

Justice Chavan, a special public prosecutor for the State in various cases, was an Empaneled Council for the ED and Justice Dubash was secretary for one of the oldest barriers of India – the Bombay Bar Association. Justice Deshpande, located in Nagpur, worked as an assistant -lawyer general of India for the Nagpur -Bank of the Supreme Court.

The only woman on the list, Justice Jadhav, is from Aurangabad and her appointment takes the power from female judges to 13, the highest in years in the Supreme Court.

Justice Wakode, from Nagpur, is the distant family member of CJI Gavai and has been representing the government and municipal companies for many years, while Justice Bhonsale is the son of the late lawyer Raja Bhonsale, former lawyer -general of Maharashtra and judge of the High Court of Bombay. It is also said that Justice Pathan had his private practice before taking the oath of office.
