Sergio Garcia hoped on Monday to be one of the six captain of the European captain Luke Donald’s Picks. He was not, because Donald chose to run 11 of the 12 members back from his 2023 Ryder Cup-winning team, with only Rasmus Hojgaard, who automatically qualified for the team, to replace his twin brother Nicolai.
With his Ryder Cup -Lot sealed, Garcia withdrew from this week’s Irish Open at K Club to process his disappointment in missing the team event.
“I felt that I was so looking forward to being part of that team, and so I felt mentally, you know, mentally it was rather difficult,” Garcia told golf magic. “I didn’t want to go there and not be fully involved in the tournament and such, so I just decided to take a little free time and spend it with the family and do a few things, you know, some things outside of golf and just a little reboot a bit, to restore the batteries.”
The 45-year-old Garcia is the leader of the Ryder Cup points of Europe of all time, but did not seem to be seriously considering a place on Donald’s team. Garcia won Liv Hong Kong in March, but only placed two top-10 finishes in the last 10 events in the schedule of the Breakaway League. At the Majors his best finish was a T34 in the open air.
Why the 2025 Ryder Cup starts earlier than you think it is doing

Garcia played in 10 right Ryder cups before he missed the 2023 event after his transshipment to Liv Golf. In April 2023, the DP World Tour won its legal fight against Liv Golf, with an arbitration panel that matches the DP world tour, could punish members who have violated his conflicting tournament -release policy. The DP World Tour announced shortly after those 16 of the 17 players who had left for Liv and noticed that Garcia was the only one who refused to do this. The Spaniard then declined his membership, so he did not qualify for the Ryder Cup.
Last November Garcia paid his fines and repeated his DP World Tour membership, which brought him a good reputation with the European circuit and gave him a way to Donald’s 2025 team. But after a T67 at the PGA championship, Garcia was not Bullish about his chances of making the team, considering how bad he played then.
“The way I play, even if Luke now offered me a choice, I would tell him no,” Garcia said at Quail Hollow. “Of course I have to get better. I have to get more what I was just in front of the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help team Europe. It’s as simple as that.”
But that number changed on the Open Championship on Royal Portush. Garcia noticed several times in the past year that he and Donald ‘chats’ had had about him who return to the Ryder Cup. In Noord -Iierland, Garcia pointed to his Ryder Cup experience as something that the team could use at Bethpage Black. Something he believed would be a spring in his Cap Come selection time.
“I think I can bring things to the team – to every team that would probably need it,” said Garcia. “At the end of the day, when you are there on the track, it is nice to have one of those experienced guys around you to put their arm around you and make you feel not worried, I have you, if people shout and shout at you and your wishes all the bad things you can imagine. Yes, it’s easy to go in a bit. [Parnevik] In ’99 [at Brookline] As Rookie. He made it so easy for me. It is clear that we have played great, but he made it so nice and so easy for me to really enjoy the moment and enjoy the Ryder Cup, even away as cool as the crowds could be. “
Then there was also the Jon Rahm of all this.
Rahm was one of Donald’s six Captain’s Picks on Monday, together with Shane Lowry, Sepp Sepp Sepp, Viktor HOVOLAND, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick. Rahm and Garcia came together during the Ryder Cup 2021 at Whistling Straits. They were the only light place for Europe and went 3-0-0 in a defeat of 19-9.
Garcia hoped that the possibility to do again that dynamite pairs would work to his advantage.
“You would think so,” Garcia said when he was asked if his partnership with Rahm would be useful at Bethpage. “Jon and I are good friends. We played well when we played in Whistling Straits. I watched a few YouTube videos there this week at our matches there. We had a great time. We have geles together. Of course it is easy to play with Jon because he is so good. It’s still a few months to go.”
Garcia told Golfmagic that his phone call with Donald was ‘good’, but ‘not the call he wanted’.
Donald will bring Rory Mcilroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert Macintyre, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Viktor HOvland, Ludvig Åberg, Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick Black.
The Ryder Cup starts on 26 September.
