Caps win in shootout, but other goalkeeper gets injured

The Washington Capitals headed to Detroit City on Thursday night to take on the Red Wings in a less-than-successful road trip.

Nic Dowd got the Caps on the board first with a nice snap between two Detroit defenders, giving the boys a 1-0 lead in the first.

Ben Chiarot got the Wings on the board with a wide-open slap shot from the point off a Kaner feed.

Kaner’s assist makes him the all-time leader among US-born players, passing Mike Modano. I really wish he was invited to the Olympics instead of old Brock Nelson.

Then in the 3rd, with the score tied, Dylan Strome found the rebound in front of the net and beat the Wings goalie with a great play for the turnover to make it 2-1 Caps. Strome has put together a 20-point team in the last 21 games.

Then Declan Chisholm gets his first goal of the season off a deflection from a point shot attempt. To give the Caps a 3-1 lead with 5 minutes to play.

With the Wings net empty, the blocked point shot attempt caused a scramble in front of the net where the Caps couldn’t clear it and Alex DeBrincat grabbed the loose puck and knocked it home to make it 3-2 with 1:40 left in the 3rd.

Then, with less than a minute left, we saw one of the weirdest goals in NHL history. Debrincat went to dump the puck in and somehow it hit the camera hole on the glass and ricocheted past an unsuspecting Lindgren. 3-3 game heading into extra time.

There was no mention of overtime, so we went to the shootout.

Then the boys went 3-on-3 on shooting attempts through Strome, Leonard and Dowd.

Not an ideal victory, but a victory is a victory. Also what a gritty performance from Charlie Lindgen who had to be carried to the locker room by his teammates. That means two goalies who are injured and Thompson who was out with an upper body injury.

The Capitals eventually head back to DC, where they take on the Hurricanes on Saturday night.
