The quarter-finals were decided on Wednesday and Thursday at the WTA 250 Guangzhou Open in China, and No. 2 seed Ann Li reached safely on Thursday with a comfortable 7-5 6-2 win over Colombia’s Camila Osorio.
In fact, the American was the last seed and will meet Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
Cocciaretto needed all her determination to get past former champion and home favourite, wildcard Wang Xiyu, who defeated Britain’s seventh seed Fran Jones in straight sets in the first round, with the Italian winning 6-3 2-6 6-3 on Thursday after a 2 hour 10 minute scrap.
Cocciaretto improved to 3-1 overall against Wang Xiyu and advanced to her third tour-level quarterfinal of 2025.
Qualifier Lulu Sun of New Zealand dropped just four games to another Chinese wildcard, Wang Yafan, to reach her first tour-level quarterfinal since reaching the Monterrey final in August 2024.
Sun needed just 60 minutes to beat the Chinese, 6-3 6-1, and set up a Last 8 meeting with Caty McNally, after the American found her way past Australian Ajla Tomjlanovic, 6-4 4-6 6-3, in 2 hours and 42 minutes.

It’s Seidel’s third tour-level quarterfinal of 2025, and she faces the Russian-born Kazakh with one win apiece.
Katie Volynets, another American qualifier, defeated French lucky loser Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah 6-3 6-3 to make her second appearance in the last 8 of the Tour this season, where she will meet Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai, the 2013 and 2017 Guangzhou Open champion, who returned to the quarter-finals for the fifth time with a 3-6 6-3 6-2 comeback win over Veronika Erjavec of Slovenia.
