Cold Norton B took an early hold this week at the top division of the Burnham & District Table Tennis Winter League when she took a considerable victory, while their most important rivals came across again.
The team rattled a second 9-1 victory this week and left them firmly on the Burnham stack in this early stages of the campaign.
This week’s victims were a strong Maplede B side with the gigantic twins of Keith Willett and Glenn Johnson. The match itself was much closer than the score suggests when Willett took a game from everyone and insured the Maplede point in a ranking-up setting victory over the difficult Eric Green.
Green then went deep into Fergie-time to finally win a victory over Johnson in a 13-11 last set of Extravaganza that Johnson saw an early 2-0 lead before the green gears were turned up. Hat-tricks for Cold Norton’s Ian Wall and Sam Lowman (shown above), who also worked for the Doubles Extra Point.
The only other top match this week saw the return of former singles champion Daniel Young when he first ventured with his new Woodham A crew. Young was involved in all the excitement when he went all the way out against fierce Rivals John Poysden and Keith Adams-in two extraordinary fights of five set.
Young lost to Adams 11-9 in the decision maker in his first important struggle, but then used this disappointment to gather himself when he was confronted with the very competitive Poysden. Poyden leveled the match at 2-2, but this must be just young irritated while he rattled the last set in record time to secure the point.
Between these games, the young and new partner Sanjay Saptarshi came from behind for a remarkable five-set Doubles bonus victory on Poysden and Adams.
The third player of Fambridge Gurj Bhambra had an outside the night and lost to Young and Chris Hancox before he did not have to do well. So all this led to an impressive hat trick for Adams, a welcome return for Young the Younger, and a stalemate that dampens the hope of Fambridge to reclaim the title.
In Division 2 The early pacesters are Woodham C and Maplede C, who have already opened an opening at the head of the table.
This week an All-Firing Woodham C Trio sent the usually very competitive full-force Maldon B-side. In a last 8-2 score there were triple for little Tim Pulham and Peter Harverson (average age of 38), with Alan Dadswell noted a good victory over Colin Barrell.
Pulham and Dadswell then did the unthinkable and won the doubles against the usually unbeatable Barrell/Steve Aspland combination. For Maldon, Garry Eames did well to overcome the Dadswell threat in a turbulent five-setter.
Mapedenene C was kept to account by Blackwater A and their wide variety of styles and rubbers. It all ended in an honorable attraction with the Forehand of Andy Seaman who took a triplicate for his MapDedene Posse.
Maldon A dominated the Maldon Derby against their C-team and won 8-2 with a hat trick for Lloyd Bennett-Smith about which he was recording the ex-team-Dawn Baldry and was in Deuce in the fifth with his hard opponent. Even on 13-13 it was difficult to call, but Bennett-Smith has the latter two points just before the brag. Baldry won her other games to keep the A-team under control.
In the collision of the center of the table between Stow Maries B and Cold Norton D, it was the dave Moles sparingly used that shone the brightest while he poked himself and brought himself to a seasonal debut trick for his repentance while they were a draw. Maybe they will call him more now.
Blackwater C and D are already cherishing in the daylight between itself and the rest of the Division 3 Teams. Both had internal victories this week when the C-Team F defeated, and D-team improved the e-team offer all the alphabetical balance.
The Jason Bush of the F-Team was the only thorn in the C-team’s progress when he took the two points of his team, leaving Gary Smith as the only undefeated player of the night-a simple and accomplished set of three sets for the serving Maestro.
The D-team had Davids Sage and Benstead to thank all their points while defeating the E-team with 7-3. Many five Setters in this derby that overflowed almost the next morning. Kath Little and Deb Ginn both took five to get the better by Jacqui TREACEY, Benstead needed all 10 sets to pass Little and Phil West, and Sage came from behind Ginn to reach the last two sets 11-9 for a close victory for his hat trick.
David Bateman from St. Lawrence had a squat night when his team Maldon D was recording, however, was the only one smiling in the bay, because his hat trick combined with all other points of his team only added a maximum of three. The Maldon trio of Shirely Carroll, James Raymond and Luca Riedling have all recorded two victories each.
This week, the Burnham League was sad about the loss of one of his former loyal players – Ralph Gibson – who died this week after a fight with illness. Ralph played last for the Mayland Club and will be very much missed by all his clubmates and opponents.
