BCCI’s plan to fire Suryakumar Yadav APPEARS ahead of 2026 T20 World Cup

BCCI’s plan to fire Suryakumar Yadav APPEARS ahead of 2026 T20 World Cup

The Indian selectors are all set to announce the squad for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup on December 20 and it has been an open secret for long that 35-year-old captain Suryakumar Yadav may not be the ideal captaincy candidate to continue in the post-ICC T20 World Cup era, PTI reported.

The wait is finally over as the defending champions are about to embark on another ICC T20 World Cup campaign and team selections are on the agenda. The Indian selectors apparently have no intention of making any revolutionary changes.

The BCCI will make a formal announcement for the 15-member squad on Saturday, December 20. However, the BCCI would have the liberty to make changes in the squad till the day of the start of the World Cup, i.e. February 7.

Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly unlikely to continue as captain for the Indian T20I

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s form is a major concern for the Indian side as it has been more than fourteen months since the Indian skipper failed to use his bat. His form has come under the scanner several times; the only reason he has kept his place is his captaincy.

The player, who is 35 years old, has been missing form for over a year and with so many promising players still waiting for a place in the Indian T20I squad, Suryakumar Yadav’s form post-World Cup needs to be scrutinized.

The first step towards the motive is to remove him from the captaincy after the T20 World Cup, and while everyone in the committee and the BCCI has been silent on the matter, the message in the dressing room seems to be imminent. Gambhir has also hinted at the same and mentioned Shubman Gill’s name for the captaincy in all formats for India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal may be backed as a reserve opener ahead of the T20 World Cup

Shubman Gill has also retained his place in the team due to his poor form. The reasons for this are his vice-captaincy and the immense confidence of the head coach, Gautam Gambhir. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was eager to make his entry into the playing XI from the sidelines.

Jaiswal played an impressive series against South Africa as he was an eminent run-scorer and also finished as the second highest run-scorer for India in the series with a maiden hundred. He has also proven time and time again that he is a more versatile shot maker than both Shubman Gill and his backup, Sanju Samson.

It will be interesting to see if India name him as a back-up in the World Cup squad and try him out for a match or two in the New Zealand series as the Men in Blue will play the series with their World Cup squad.

Should India drop Washington Sundar to make way for Rinku Singh?

The only weak link in India’s current T20I squad appears to be Washington Sundar, who has neither proven effective nor plays a specific role in the side. Sundar is a backup player, and that too as a bowling all-rounder.

With the likes of Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav already in the side, there would be no need for spinners. India would rather name Rinku Singh, the left-handed middle-order batsman who can replace any injured player, or even replace Shivam Dube or Axar Patel if they fail to deliver enough for the World Cup.

Rinku Singh has been dropped from the T20I squad after the Asia Cup as Gambhir believes the T20 format only needs players who can perform with both bat and ball.
