BBC Sport responds from ‘neutrals’ to Newcastle United after 1-0 defeat to Man U

Interesting to read these comments from BBC Sport, following Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the Premier League.

The comments from neutral people in particular tell…

It was very different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from BBC Sport’s ‘neutrals’.

BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past have largely been a catalog of abuse directed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the owners of Newcastle United and the media-inspired fuss that NUFC fans have become accustomed to when they are blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics were completely absent, focusing instead on matters on the pitch and wondering how Newcastle United failed to score.

The BBC Sport readers comments of neutral players, some Man U fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘Newcastle could have played until Christmas and not scored.’

“Tonali hasn’t been well for a month, his death was terrible.”

‘Because he is instructed to play the ball into the channels, or to hit and hope for Woltemade. He’s too good a footballer to be wasted like that.’

‘Newcastle looks so toothless. I’m not sure why they took Woltemade away, because at least he gives them hope of reaching the end of the stream of seemingly silly crosses.”

‘I should never have taken Casemiro away. But I think Amorim can claim that the result was to his liking.’

‘Newcastle toothless. Man U played a brilliant first half. I can’t explain the second half.’

‘Great tactic from Ruben to go with eight defenders and keep your mouth shut.’

“Newcastle really should have gotten something out of the game. To not get any of it, especially with the dominance in the 2nd half, is especially bad.”

‘Newcastle hopeless, Howe clueless.’

UCL twice, Wembley twice, League Cup victory by Pool, Arsenal (twice!), Chelsea, City.

Semi-finals of the League Cup this season and a good chance of auto-qualification for the knockout stages of the UCL this year.

One game away and one goal lost to a supposedly big club.

No idea?? Hahahahahahaha

There is only one person who is hopeless and clueless.”

‘Breaking performance by Dorgu. He was fantastic in that first half. He was clearly delighted with his beautiful strike for the winning goal and his confidence only grew. Especially tired towards the end, but he deserves all the credit for this performance. Cunha was always a threat and Heaven was great at the back alongside Martinez, the regular skipper.’

‘Dorgu with a great goal, after which Man U parked the bus. Good? It clearly worked, and Man U might have a shot at CL football at this rate. Well played and well done on a clean sheet.”

‘Most pathetic image all night. Man utd “fans” who abuse the Newcastle players and give v signs every time they have a corner/throw-in, while wearing half and half scarves with Newcastle colors on them…you are really pathetic.”

‘Man Utd mainly have tourists, not fans.’

‘I agree, and I’m a Man United fan. Real fans are being driven away for fanboy tourists.”

‘The most pathetic Man utd fans singing anti-Shearer songs, he retired almost 20 years ago!’

‘Newcastle will probably be very embarrassed to have lost to Man U.’

‘I know Gordon, Murphy, Tonali, Bruno, Woltemade, Wissa and Barnes can all play better than that.

So many opportunities to cross and so little to actually cross!’

‘I’m not sure Newcastle would have scored if they had played until New Year’s Eve. Isak hasn’t played well for Liverpool yet, but Newcastle miss him, I think, because he was perfect for their system.’

‘In the first half we held our own with the tactics we all wanted. Second has returned to his system and Newcastle were all over us. We were just lucky that they are as bad up front as we are.’

‘Man U only won thanks to the clear penalty that the VAR and the Manchester referee had rejected against them.’

‘Agree. I don’t understand how that wasn’t given when he hit his arm, then his hand and then kicked away. That would never have been solved without the hand. He even chuckled about it to his teammates afterwards.”

‘Newcastle have to be the second worst team in the Premier League.’

‘Am I the only one who thinks Murphy is absolutely terrible, bottles every 50:50, has one decent cross in 10, watches the ball all the time and makes a mistake time and time again.

I cringe when I see it start.”

“Is that a new rule that you can play handball if the reason you did it is because you pushed someone else?”

‘All Man U fans can look forward to tonight, but let’s be honest: they are definitely miles behind a top team. 1-0 up and then play a back 10, HOME. Newcastle are struggling to score at the moment, but they will come.”

‘Ramsdale has yet to make a really good save. Since he came on for Pope we have conceded so many goals that a top goalkeeper would have saved. So average. Mind you, great save from Martinez. And he almost caught it!’

‘Man U behaved like a non-league team in the second half and just hung on. Newcastle were the much better team, but lack a Morgan Rogers-type player who can make a difference. Shocking to see Newcastle in the bottom half of the table and Man U in fifth place?’
