Manchester United 1 Newcastle United 0 – December 26, 2025 8:00 PM
Newcastle United fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘How did we lose this match???
Absolutely gutted and left Old Trafford again.
I’ve never been here and seen us have so much possession and yet we couldn’t convert it into goals against a team that always concedes…
Poor crossing, poor finishing and the usual nothing coming our way results in yet another Old Trafford defeat.
On to Turf Moor on Tuesday, it has to be better than this to take the win…’
Greg McPeake:
‘Second match in a row in which I say: what is the point of VAR if they start making up the rules as they go along.
The fact that we didn’t get anything out of the game was probably because no one had their shooting boots on, and not from a lack of effort.
A bit embarrassing for Man U who are celebrating a home win against us in this way.’
Jamie Smith:
‘While that was a very decent second half in many respects, this is still a shocking result.
Man Utd are terrible and they looked terrified all night.
Many previous Newcastle teams would have gone for the jugular and ripped them apart, but instead we got the usual display of misplaced passes, baffling decisions and poor to non-existent final balls.
It’s really disappointing to come away with nothing here and continue in the form that has really fallen off a cliff this season.
You’d be brave to support us if we got something from Turf Moor on Tuesday.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘Make no mistake: that was a terrible result against a vulnerable Man U team.
Howe continues to look like he’s testing the definition of madness.
Like for like changes, meaning we continually try the same thing and expect different results.
Woltemade should have been given the opportunity to play behind Wissa today, instead we made predictable substitutions that provided little positive impact.
Something has to change.’
GTone:
‘I can’t believe we didn’t get at least one point from that.
We battered them and still we lose.
Of course the referee played his role with the VAR. That was a clear handball, but we had more than enough chances.
We completely outplayed them, but we lost because we have a goalkeeper who doesn’t make the big saves when we need him.
I have Pope planned, but Ramsdale is something else.
I’m absolutely devastated by that.
Not the performance but the result.
Even though we lost, Lewis Hall was by far the best player on the field.”
David Punton:
‘I’ve said almost every week that this season would never match what they achieved last season.
Here too: more toil, more struggle.
You don’t expect to win easily at Old Trafford, but tonight was an opportunity.
Someone decided to scrap Boxing Day footy but then decided we still needed to be there for the 8pm kick-off.
We had all the ball in the second half, but poor final ball, poor execution and poor decisions meant we didn’t create many real chances.
We lost narrowly, but it’s still a loss.
We are better than this too. It’s frustrating.
Final word for the Sky Sports studio line-up: Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville. Nice balance – not.’
Billy Miller:
“Another frustrating one.
Against Chelsea and Man Utd, two teams we want to compete with, we were worth six points.
We got away with one.
If we had capitalized, we could have been in 5th place right now.
Dominated tonight without creating much.
It was a huge opportunity because they were missing so many key players, but our killer instinct was missing.
Now that they were 10 again, could we have experimented with Wissa next to Woltemade?
2025 was the best year of my life in Newcastle, but it ends with a whimper.
“I keep saying that a run of wins will see us move up, but we have to get them quickly.”
Tony Mallabar:
‘I’m on the bus coming from Old Trafford and I don’t know if we should start.
How did we not win???’
Simon Ritter:
‘Maximum effort, minimum threat of attack.
If you can’t keep a clean sheet, stats such as possession, territorial advantage and touches in the penalty area count for now if the attackers are toothless.
For much of the hundred or so minutes this was a game of attack versus defense, with the visitors to the fore.
However, we rarely tested Lammens and did not put in more effort on target than the winners; three.
Lewis Hall was our best player by a country mile.
None of his teammates deserved better than 6/10 and some of our biggest stars deserved a four or lower.
Newcastle United are capable of beating any opponent, but too many missed chances make us a cup team rather than a team capable of mounting a serious challenge in the Premier League.”
