Andy Roddick explains reasons why Daniil Medvedev will return to the top 10 in 2026

Andy Roddick says he is “very confident” that Daniil Medvedev will continue his comeback journey in 2026 and return to the top 10.

Medvedev, who started the year ranked fifth in the world, left the top 10 in March. It was the first time in more than two years that he fell outside the top 10.

While Medvedev managed to quickly get back into the top 10 club, he left it again after Wimbledon. At one point, the Russian was even ranked 18th and came close to leaving the top 20 for the first time since 2018. However, that scenario was avoided after the former world number 1 won Almaty and reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters – helping him improve five places to end the year at number 13.

Last season, Medvedev had a disastrous Grand Slam year as he exited the Australian Open in the second round, before suffering first-round losses in the next three Majors. That means the 29-year-old will effectively have no more points to defend in the Slams next year – which sets him up well for big points wins.

Roddick: Medvedev won one Grand Slam match in 2025 and still finished No. 13

“I think he’s in the top 10. When you said he won one match at a Major. I think he still finished 13, and he won one match at a Major… One match at a Major, 13, that could be the highest ranking against the Slam output. And it’s not that the guy can’t play in Slams, he’s won one, he’s been in the final of three or four other matches. I think that Meddy is back in the top ten. Next year I’m very confident after hearing your Slam stat,” Roddick said on his podcast.

Somewhat interestingly, when Medvedev reached the world No. 1 ranking for the first time in 2022, he became the first player outside the Big Four to achieve the feat since Roddick in 2004.
