Andrew Friedman shares honest assessment of Dodgers pitching depth, offseason prospects

It seems increasingly likely that the Los Angeles Dodgers will add one of baseball’s best pitchers to their already dominant pitching rotation.

The Detroit Tigers are acquiring two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal as the two sides have made no progress toward signing an extension. Skubal’s contract expires after the 2026 season, and if Detroit doesn’t plan to keep him around beyond that, they could reap a huge profit by dealing the ace ahead of the season.

The Dodgers are often mentioned as a team that could make a move for Skubal given their apparent desire to go all-in on the 2026 season with one of, if not the most loaded rosters in baseball.

Landing Skubal would mean the Dodgers would have to part with a plethora of talented players, including perhaps both starting pitchers Emmet Sheehan and Tyler Glasnow. However, the Dodgers have the luxury of entering trade talks for one of baseball’s best players due to their wealth of starting pitching talent.

“We’ve never been here in December with the kind of pitching depth we have now,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain. “That said, we’re never going to be flippant about it. We have a lot of really talented weapons. Guys that other teams are really interested in. How that plays out, I’m not sure yet. Like everything else, it has to be aligned and make sense for both parties, and that’s tough.”

With a starting rotation of Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Glasnow, with Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan, Gavin Stone or River Ryan taking the fifth spot, the Dodgers have a wealth of talent at the starting pitching position. While depth isn’t something the Dodgers would easily part with, if sending away a few of their starters meant acquiring Skubal, Friedman and the Dodgers’ front office could have a hard time rejecting that offer.
