The American Olympic and Paralympic Committee has in fact excluded transgender women to participate in women’s sports, and tells the federations that supervise swimming, athletics and other sports, it has an “obligation to satisfy” with an executive order issued by Donald Trump.
The new policy, announced on Monday with a calm change on the website of the USOPC and confirmed in a letter sent to the national sports boards, follows a similar step that the NCAA took earlier this year.
The USOPC change is noticeable as a detail under “Usopc athlete Safety Policy” and refers to the executive order of the US President, where men from the sports sports are kept, signed in February. This order threatens, among other things, to “withdraw all funds” from organizations that allow the participation of Transatleet to women’s sports.
American Olympic officials told the national administrative bodies that they should follow the example and added: “The USOPC has had a series of respectful and constructive conversations with federal officials” because Trump signed the order.
“As a federally chartered organization, we have the obligation to meet the federal expectations,” wrote the usopc CEO Sarah Hirshland and President Gene Sykes in a letter. “Our revised policy emphasizes the importance of guaranteeing fair and safe competition environments for women. All national administrative bodies are obliged to work their applicable policy in line.”
The National Women’s Law Center made a statement in which the relocation is convicted.
“By giving to the political requirements, the usopc sacrifices the needs and safety of his own athletes,” said the president and CEO of that organization, Fatima Goss Graves.
The USOPC supervises around 50 national administrative bodies, most of which play a role in everything, of the basic levels of their sport. This evokes the possibility that rules should be possible to change at local sports clubs to retain their memberships in the NGBs.
Some of those organizations – for example USA Track and Field – have long followed the guidelines set by their own World Federation. World Athletics is considering changes in his policy that would usually come into line with the Order of Trump.
A US spokesperson said that the federation had been informed of the change of the USOPC and was a consultation with the committee to find out what changes it needs. USA Fencing changed its policy on August 1 to only allow “athletes of female sex” in the women’s competition and to open men’s events in “all athletes who are not eligible for the women’s category, including transgender women, transgender men, non-intens and intersex athletes”.
The national battle for Trans Girls on Girls and Women’s Sports Teams has taken place on both state and federal levels, while Republicans represent the issue as a fight for athletic fairness. More than two dozen states have established laws that persuade women and girls to participate in certain sports competitions. Some policy measures have been blocked in court by those who say that the policy is discriminatory, cruel and unnecessarily focused on a small niche of athletes.
The NCAA has changed its participation policy for Trans -Athletes to limit competition in women’s sports to athletes who were assigned feminine at birth. That change came a day after Trump signed the executive order that was intended to ban transgender athletes from girls and women’s sports.
Female suitability is an important problem for the International Olympic Committee among his new president, Kirsty Coventry, who has indicated an attempt to “protect the female category”. The IOC has allowed individual sports federations to determine their own rules at the Olympic Games – and some have already taken steps on the subject.
Stricter rules for transgender athletes – apart from women’s events, everyone who has gone through male puberty is hired by swimming, cycling and track and field. Voetbal regains the qualifier rules for women and can set limits to Testosterone.
Trump has said that he wants the IOC to change everything “that has to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject”. Los Angeles organizes the summer games in 2028.
