A virus almost killed him; Now Brett White just shot 59 and won his first American title

Make that two 59s in the same number of days on PGA Tour Americas.

This time it led to the victory.

Brett White started the last round of Sunday of the commissionaries Ottawa Open Seven shots behind leader Philip Barbaardee Jr., who had celebrated 13-under 59 a day earlier in Eagle Creek Golf Club. White, 32, is eight years away from almost dying of viral encephalitis, which he contracted while he was a member of PGA Tour Latinoamerica. He spent three weeks in the hospital and had to learn basic tasks again, including talking and walking. His return to Golf came about a year after his hospitalization, and he won the 2019 Nevada Open and 2020 Michigan Open as part of his comeback. He received Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in 2021 to earn his KFT card before 2022, although he only started to lose two top 25s in 20.

“It has been a wild ride,” White told Golf Canal in 2021. “During a long journey you sometimes go back and you go, wow, I have to be grateful for where I am. I don’t think I stopped.”
