A third of a puck. That was all that stood between the #1 Terriers and a come-from-behind victory against #3/4 Michigan State. After rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to tie the score, BU looked to score in overtime Cole Eiserman’The shot went through MSU’s Trey Augustinebut before the puck fully crossed the goal line, it was cleared by Shane Vansaghi.

His mistake sent the puck off the boards and onto the ice, creating a two-on-one with only Gavin McCarthy back. Matt Gasgall one-time pass from freshmen Ryker Lee and defeat Mikhail Yegorov to the stick side from 20 feet. A video review confirmed that Eiserman’s shot did not reach the goal line.

Within seconds, the Terriers and their fans had gone from a seemingly thrilling victory to a crushing defeat.

ā€œThere’s no doubt about it, it’s positive after last night,ā€ coach Jay Pandolfo said after the game.

Looking ahead, he said, “We have to compete like we did tonight. That’s what we learned. Last night, in the third period, I’m not saying we quit, but we didn’t fight. And tonight we did that too. So we have to build on that.”

While the Terriers started the game better than Friday, Michigan State still had more puck possession time and a 14-7 shot advantage. The Spartans opened the scoring at 8:46 when Lee stood behind the BU defense and threw a shot over Yegorov.

BU improved its play in the second period with better breakouts and held a 12-7 lead with better chances, thanks in large part to three MSU penalties. Goalkeeper Trey Augustine stoned an Eiserman blast from the right circle midway through the period. The visitors destroyed each of the power plays and then doubled their lead. A scramble behind the BU cage sent the puck to an unmarked one Doorman Martone outside the fold for a quick finish.

Terriers finally solved Augustinus two minutes into the third period, strong work behind the MSU goal line Ben Merrill set up McCarthy for a one-timer from the right circle that zoomed past the goalie’s blocker. Brandon Svoboda picked up the secondary assist. 2-1.

A D-zone blunder less than a minute later quieted the BU crowd. Martone intercepted a pass just inside the Terrier blueline, setting up another two-on-one. Drawing Aiden Celebrini to him, Martone slid the puck to him Tommi Mannisto who fired it past Yegorov with the stick side.

A Cole Hutson An interference penalty at 11:43 gave the Spartans a chance to extend the lead, but Kamil Bednarik popped the puck loose just outside the MSU blue line, raced it to the net and beat Augustine high to the blocker’s side. The unsupported count brought the Terriers within one.

Just two minutes later, BU tied the score Conrad Fondrk diverted Sascha Boummedienne‘s shot from the left, past Augustinus. [See highlights linked below].

In the 3-on-3 overtime, both teams were cautious and carried the puck out of the attacking zone when there was no shooting opportunity. With just over a minute left in the extra session, Owen McLaughlin raced the offense in a 2-on-1 rush. He slid the puck to Eiserman for a one-timer from the bottom of the circle that trickled through Augustine and appeared to cross the goal line. But a linesman quickly indicated that there was no goal.

Seconds later, the Spartans celebrated a hard-fought victory and a series sweep.

Of the Terriers’ near game-winner, Pandolfo explained: ā€œI don’t think it’s completely over yet. To be honest, I haven’t really looked into it yet, but… [the officials]I’m sure I had pretty good vision.”

Bednarik picked up most of the key faces in the final period as BU shortened the bench and skated three lines and two defensive pairs. Pandolfo explained:

“I have a lot of confidence in Kamil, the way he plays the game. He is always very good positionally, very good defensively, has a great stick. He is very smart and has more attacking skills than people realise. He is a really responsible 60-metre centerman.”

The final shots were 34 for each team. Augustine retired with 31 points while Yegorov saved 30. Neither team converted on a power play that saw BU go 0-4 and MSU 0-2.
