In an effort to get you moving toward your 2026 goal, we’re introducing five key tips for you to focus on next year. Now read on and get started.
5 important tips for 2026: Make more putts
Ready to finally drain more putts? According to Adam Smitha GOLF teacher to watch and the head golf instructor at The Country Club of Virginia, the key to improving your putting starts with changing the way you practice. More specifically, what you practice First.
“Dedicate this year to going to green-first practice,” says Smith. “I tell my students to do this and it really pays off. All golfers are programmed to go to the range first and hit the balls. And because they’re too tired from swinging, they putt very briefly.”
Smith says the routine of hitting the balls first and then quickly rolling a few putts before teeing off is a habit that weekend warriors find hard to change — and don’t even realize it’s holding them back.
“The best players in the world spend 50 percent of their practice time putting and the other 50 percent working on their full swing,” says Smith. “So my advice is to turn over a new leaf this year to improve your golf game and practice putting before hitting range balls.”
Some bonus advice? Smith says he also needs to get fit for a putter. While the benefits of a full-bag fitting are obvious, getting fit for a putter is just as important as for the other clubs, especially since it is the club you use most.
“The funny thing is we use our putter on every hole, and yet everyone wants the best driver,” says Smith. “Contact a certified golf club fitting professional who is skilled in fitting putters – the correct length, lie angle, grip size and style of putter head should all be taken into account. Make an appointment, get fit and then invest in the most important piece of equipment in your golf bag.”
And then you know what to do: go to the putting green for the driving range.
