Top seeds Alexander Zverev ended the title defense of Alexei Popyrin at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers with a patient Comeback on Monday evening at the ATP Masters 1000.

The German cut a frustrated figure after missing two set points in the opening cup but quickly recovered for a 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 victory in Toronto. Zverev ran to 3-0 leads in the second and third sets and maintained a high level during the last set in a comfortable finish.

Now in his 75th semi -final at tour level, Zverev joins Novak Djokovic (196) among the only two active men who reached that brand. By continuing to his 21st semi-final on the Masters-1000, his first since last year’s Rolex Paris Masters, Zverev ran for Roddick for the seventh most in series history (since 1990).

In a struggle of former Canada champions, Montreal Champion Zverev 2017 ended the repeat offer of his opponent. Pofyrin was a perfect 9-0 on the ATP Masters 1000 after his surprise title in Montreal last year.

The Aussie grabbed the opening set with a pick -up volley that cut and drip it, but his momentum was immediately stopped by a professional effort of the number 3 in the PIF ATP ranking list. While a late second set of Wobble Pofyrin handed its only break of the match, Zverev confirmed his authority with a crucial five-game run of 4-4 in the middle set.

ZVEREV won 82 percent of his first settlement points, according to Infosys ATP statistics, and won 16 of his last 17 points on serve. He closed the game in style with a drop volley winner and is now waiting for Karen Khahanov or Alex Michelsen in the Semis.
