Zion Williamson is committed to rinsing the tape on his amateur highlight reel. If he can get it done, it is a nightmare scenario for opposite teams.
The Pelicans spent his summer in an intense conditioning program and arrived on Tuesday in the team day of the team in strikingly good form – a physique that escaped him since he arrived at NBA level.
But it’s not just for the show. He can also feel the difference.
“I really felt a shift in my body,” He told reporters TuesdayAdding: “Since the university, high school I have not felt anymore, just where I can walk into a gym and I feel good.”
After swearing a hamstring injury that limited him to just 30 games last season, Williamson started a strict training regime prescribed by trainer Daniel Bove, one intended to tackle his fluctuating weight and consistent injuries.
The training consisted of boxing training and drilling on football fields.
Williamson, 25, repeated his dedication to the program and his team and noted: “Whatever my team needs, that’s what I will do.”
He also described his strong relationships with the newly hired EVP of basketball operations, Joe Dumars and SVP of basketball operations, Troy Weaver, who has encouraged Williamson – and held him responsible – throughout the process.
‘[Dumars is] I will keep myself responsible, and while holding me responsible, he will also give me a lot of responsibility, which I am enthusiastic about, ” Said Williamson. “I know he will stick to a very high standard, and if I glide or something, I know he will be there to make sure that I get back on the path.”
From a mixtape superster on the Spartanburg Day school to a five-star recruitment at Duke, Williamson was one of the most explosive prospects of his time-a dominant power that fascinated its way through opposing defenses and in the competition as the number 1 general Trekpick in 2019.
But that was a long time ago, and Williamson still has to realize his full potential at a professional level.
Dissolging due to injuries and weight problems, Williamson played in just 214 of a possible 472 games during his first six seasons (45.3 percent).
He has exceeded 30 games that are played in just two seasons-the 2021-22 campaign completely missing and still has to appear in a play-off game, despite the pelicans who make the after season during his term of office.
The five -year extension Williamson signed in 2022 even included a contract provision around his Play weight and body fat percentage.
Yet Williamson has shown his ability to dominate when healthy. He has elevated career markings of 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per match – Handen home occasionally a highlight of the Reel Dunk for which he was once notorious.
Williamson seems to be the challenge – but now it is up to him to embody the superstar that New Orleans thought they were coming back in 2019.
