The Japanese striker takes on ONE World Flyweight Kickboxing Champion Superlek in a bantamweight kickboxing match AN 173: Superbon vs. Noiri on Sunday, November 16 at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. The 27-year-old Team Vasileus product brings a 12-fight winning streak into this career-defining moment. His path from bullied youth to kickboxing championship reads like fiction, except every struggle is true.
Yoza grew up quiet and gentle in Tsuchiura. He rarely spoke and had a shyness that made him vulnerable to bullies who exploited his peaceful nature.
His parents recognized the need to equip their son with self-confidence and defensive skills. When he was six years old, they took him to a karate class. The big-eyed boy immediately asked if he wanted to join in.
When he stepped onto the floor of the dojo, something that had been dormant within him awoke. Despite initially struggling against more experienced peers, Yoza had an unwavering belief in himself from the start.
“I was a very gentle and rather timid child who always gave in to others rather than standing on my own two feet. But when I was six, my parents took me to a lesson at a karate dojo, and I apparently said that’s what I wanted to do there,” he said.
“When I started karate I was weak, but even then I believed I could become a world champion.”
Yuki Yoza embraced everyday training to achieve excellence in kickboxing
Yuki Yoza practiced the basics of Kyokushin karate until they became instinctive. He studied fighters in multiple disciplines, absorbing what resonated and discarding what did not. His obsession with martial arts led to continuous improvement.
Weekly sparring sessions became his laboratory. He tested techniques, analyzed the results, sought advice from trainers and then repeated the process relentlessly.
At the age of 19, he captured a Karate World Championship. The moment he had envisioned since childhood had finally arrived. But the satisfaction never came. Instead, restlessness consumed him as that peak revealed itself as just a plateau.
He found the perfect environment at Team Vasileus alongside Masaaki Noiri and Takeru Segawa. But true to form, comfort never satisfied him. In February 2023, he traveled to Mike’s Gym in the Netherlands, where he immersed himself in a culture known for producing ruthless competitors.
“I want to master martial arts. Whether that means disciplines other than kickboxing, I don’t know. See how far I can push myself. It’s about challenging myself. You could say I want to do things that no one else can do,” he said.
