The question most Newcastle United fans on social media seem to be asking at the moment is whether or not they should get rid of Eddie Howe.
We all know that there is no sentiment in modern football.
However, there is a much bigger picture and consequences that factor into this decision.
Firstly, the spirit in the camp and the unity he fostered between players and families at the club would undoubtedly diminish, players would leave and the structure that had been built, resulting in the first domestic trophy since 1969, would collapse.
Secondly, the next question would be: who would replace him?
Now we can respond to as many names as we want. Glasner? Iraola? Sweep? Alonso? However, what would be the reality?
Newcastle United’s wage bill is much lower than that of Liverpool, Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea, the income of those clubs allows them to offer higher wages.
It seems like a challenge to attract the very best from Europe.
As we saw with last summer’s goals, disaster after disaster, with players beating us back to the likes of Man U and Chelsea.
I feel like some of the first team players who are currently away are having a big impact.
As much as I’m not a fan of Burn being a left back, we miss him when he’s not there at center back. His determination, heart, character and threat at set pieces are a miss. The same goes for people like Botman and Tino, they are missed and that has to be taken into account in the recent results. Especially when you’re away from home, where you need bigger characters to guide you through games.
Next season, PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) will be replaced by SCR (Squad Cost Ratio), but the fact remains that both systems, the clubs with the highest income, can spend the most on transfer fees and wages.
For Newcastle United, a new stadium with a significantly increased capacity is a no-brainer for me as our club seeks to compete in the long term, both on and off the pitch.
Back to Eddie Howe.
Would it be a decision we would deeply regret if the NUFC fanbase came to the point of making this happen?
Personally, I think it would be, and something we would look back on as a huge mistake.
Be careful what you wish for.
