The transfer window is closed. Thank goodness for that.
The club made their sixth first team to deadline day, because Yoane Wissa finally made his move from Brentford.
Just like a certain former player of ours, the striker was in the middle of a saga who took place for a few weeks. It included Instagram drama and not for sale, but he was allowed to become a member of Eddie Howe on the last day.
The reimbursement is said to be an initial £ 50 million, with add-ons that the deal can cost up to £ 55 million. Wissa is about to turn 29, making the fee a steep. That said, we urgently needed another striker in the team. Ultimately, getting a player with quality became more important than getting a good fee.
This is a signing that has not been typical of the club since the acquisition. We have rarely chosen to sign players older than 26, due to the lack of resale value they have. Wissa turns 29 before we play wolves. However, that should not be seen as negative, because he has an impressive scoring record in senior football. Then Burn and Kieran Trippier show the value that exists with older players. Howe will hope that his new striker can follow in their footsteps.
Wissa was a product of the excellent recruitment system in Brentford. He was picked from the bottom of Ligue 1 after he had a productive enchantment with Lorient. During his time with the French side, he scored 37 times in 128 games in seasons in the top two divisions. It was not a record that suggested that he was going to the top of the sport.
Under Matthew Benham, Brentford has built up an excellent talent identification system and they considered Wissa as a player with potential. They signed him in 2021 due to a reimbursement of £ 8.5 million. Initially he was in and out of the team, but he stayed close to important goals. During the last two seasons, his output exploded, with 31 goals in these campaigns. He was eventually the one who replaced Ivan Toney last season and showed a return of 19 goals why.
The biggest weapon in the Arsenal of Yoane Wissa is his goals. Last season he finished 6one In the Premier League-targeting graphs. Interesting is that he had no punishments with his total. If you remove punishments from Alexander Isak, he would also have had the same number of goals as Wissa – 19.
The Wissa movement in the last third is fantastic. He has a good pace, so he can get behind and through on goal. However, he has more strings for his bow, because his movement in the box often leads to winning a garden. This is reflected by his non-penalty expected goals of 18.5. Only Erling Haaland had a higher total – 18.8.
Wissa had on average 0.57 expected goals every ninety minutes. This was higher than Alexander Isak (0.56), Nicolas Jackson (0.5) and Mohamed Salah (0.49). It is easy to see why Newcastle pursued him for as long as she is, because he is an elite because he is in the right place at the right time.
When he manages to run on goal, he is brilliant in moving the ball inside on his stronger right foot and ends with calmness. There have been several goals he scored by switching the ball to space and hitting in the right corner. Wissa is a good finisher on both feet.
Last season he regularly managed to have attempts from set pieces, even though he was shorter than many defenders. This will be an interesting weapon for Marius Mark to use the intelligence of Wissa and underlines in the last third part.
One of the less talk about the qualities of Wissa is his ability to lead the press. He works hard without the ball and makes defensive contributions on the field. This makes it well suited for How’s Newcastle.
Further to his working speed and quality In the last third part, Wissa is versatile. The striker is able to play on both flanks. That versatility will be valuable to Howe.
Although Wissa has proven to be effective with his head in the opposition penalty area, he is not the best in the air. It is unlikely that he works as a goalkeeper and wins long balls that is played by the goalkeeper or defense. In competitions where Wissa De Lijn leads, Howe might have to use Joelinton while playing long.
A good relationship was built by Wissa in Brentford with Bryan Mbuemo. The couple knew each other from the inside and that led to a good connection on the field. That said, Wissa is not the most creative of number nines. It is an average of 1.99 shot and creating actions per ninety minutes and places it in the 36one percentile among attackers.
The most important negative that is talked about online about Wissa is his lack of resale value. He is about to become 29 and it feels like Newcastle will have to accept a loss for him. In a PSR world it is a deal that is not financially useful.
The argument against this is that Wissa will score goals and last season he was one of the most threatening attackers in the Premier League. If he scores regularly for the next two seasons, there will be interest in buying him at a lowered rate and Newcastle can still limit the loss that has been delivered to him.
In basic conditions this is the perfect addition to the team for what we need. Wissa is a proven target scorer at the height of his powers. Last season his statistics were there with the very best attackers in this competition, including a certain Swede.
However, there will be criticism of this deal because of the reimbursement. It is a huge compensation for a player of his age. In a PSR era it is important that players have resale value, even if you do not intend to sell them.
However, that is an imperfect approach. You cannot cut off a huge part of the market because of the age. It would be bad to sign many players with Wissa’s age profile, but one or two signing sessions can add a lot of value to the team.
This summer was aimed at signing two strikers. In the end it seems that they have drawn two that complement each other very well. Nick Woltemade is the young striker with a huge potential, who likes to fall into deeper positions and acts as a maker. Wissa is the proven target scorer, who likes to play on the last line of defense.
It is easy to see how they can stand together and that can only benefit.
