5:20 pm: New York has made it officially and signed the Boras Corporation customer for a Minor League contract. Maeda is assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

1:35 pm: The Yankees discuss a possible deal with right -handed Kenta Maedareport Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Maeda had been to the Cubs for a Minor League deal, but was released during the weekend, according to his MLB.com Transactions Tracker.

The Yankees Maeda would probably also want to sign for a Minor League deal. The 37-year-old has had many good years, but has not been in good shape lately. He drew a two -year -old $ 24 mm deal with the tigers who went to 2024, but that deal did not work. Last year he struggled enough to be moved to the bullpen and to complete the year with a 6.09 earned run average in 112 1/3 innings.

Here in 2025 Maeda was unable to bounce back. He started the year back in the Detroit -Bullpen, but was designated for assignment after he had allowed seven earned runs in eight innings. He knew exemptions, voted free agency and signed the aforementioned Minor League deal with the Cubs. Since then he has been throwing out the rotation in Triple-A Iowa. He threw 57 1/3 innings over 12 starts with an ERA of 5.97. His 45.7% ground ball percentage at the time was reasonable, but his strike output of 18.1% and 10% hiking percentage were both insufficient.

For what it is worth, Maeda has improved. He allowed four things earned in two innings in his first start for Iowa. In his second, it was five earned points in 3 2/3. Then he allowed nine earned runs in just one inning in the third start. At that moment he had a laughable 24.30 ERA through three triple-a performances. The Cubs remained with him and he has since threw 50 2/3 innings during his nine most recent start with a 3.55 ERA, 20% strikeout percentage and 8.8% walking speed. During his last five starts, he has an ERA of 4.13 and 25.4% strikeout. In his last three outings he has an ERA of 3.18 in 17 innings with a strikeout percentage of 27.5% and a walking speed of 5.8%.

That is many cherry skies to make Maeda look good in small samples, but it might suggest a little positive momentum now that he was in a regular starting role for the first time in about a year ago.

It is risky to bet on such small samples, but there is not much disadvantage for the Yanks to take a kite. Because the Tigers have released him, they are still on the hook for the most part of what remains of his salary. That means that the Yanks only owe him a spread version of the competition minimum for every moment that Maeda finally spends on their selection.

The Yankees are without starters Gerrit Cole And Clarke Schmidt For the rest of the year, both have undergone the operation of Tommy John. Ryan Yarbrough Filled in for a while, but he was suspended by an oblique tension. The club was connected to starting pitchers prior to the deadline, but in the end he crossed the tractor.

They currently have Max baked And Carlos Rodón On top of their rotation. Luis Gil Had spent the entire season on the injured list because of a bar tension up to a few days ago. He finally made his seasonal debut yesterday, but gave four walks in 3 1/3 innings while allowing five earned points. Will Warren And Cam Schlittler are also in the rotation, but each has an ERA around 4.60. Marcus Stroman has just been released to open a selection.

Veteran Carlos Carrasco Had been in the system as a non-Roster depth, but he was recently turned to Atlanta for a player who was later or cash. Expectation Chase Hampton Required Tommy John operation earlier this year. If Maeda is brought on board for a Minor League deal, he could try to position himself as the next man for a place start or as an injury replacement.
